CHELTENHAM 2.40
MAX DYNAMO – 1pt e/w (20/1 Bet365, 14/1 Will Hill/Spreadex, 12/1 generally)

MAX DYNAMO did this column a favour when bolting up at 14-1 at Chepstow on his belated comeback in earlier February and then ran with credit to finish a 50-1 sixth of 17 in the Midlands National despite the ground being much softer than preferred. Truckers Lodge, eighth in that race, gave the form a boost when successful at Ffos Las next time. Emma Jane-Bishop’s veteran is lightly raced for his age and promises to be suited by the drying ground at Cheltenham. Like most progeny of sire Midnight Legend, he tends to come good in the second half of the season and his record since undergoing wind surgery stands at 221113P16 (4-9), improving to 21113P1 (4-7) on good to soft or faster ground.

Gloucester Brewery Holman Handicap Chase

BEVERLEY 2.50
VENTURA FLAME – 1pt e/w (9/1 generally)

VENTURA FLAME’s stall 1 draw might not be advantageous on the prevailing good to soft, soft in places, going but with extra places on offer I still want to back her each-way. The Keith Dalgleish-trained six-year-old loves tracks with stiff uphill finishes, landing seven of her 25 such starts for a profit of £35.08 to a £1 level stake at SP. Those include Beverly form figures of 713312 (2-6), with the seventh place at 100-1 from the worst of the draw – stall 14 of 14 on fast ground and she was still only beaten by three lengths. She’s been off the track since October, but her yard is going well, with two winners and five placed horses from 11 runners in the past fortnight.

Beverley Beaker Handicap

NEWMARKET 3.35
BAREFOOT ANGEL – 1pt e/w (18/1 generally)

The usual low-draw bias was evident on the straight course at Redcar in last October’s Two Year Old Trophy and Richard Fahey’s BAREFOOT ANGEL had a tricky draw to overcome (stall 11 of 16). She had caused a 20-1 upset in Group 3 company at Ayr on her previous outing and proved that was no fluke with a solid fourth to Cold Case. Switched left towards the far rail by Oisin Orr on leaving the stalls, she was outpaced in last place after two furlongs and had a mountain to climb at halfway. However, she took off when switched back towards the centre of the track, staying on strongly when in the clear to grab fourth. She was almost four lengths behind the winner, but that was a cracking effort given the torturous route she took. I’d have preferred a higher draw than stall 4 but the headwind is forecast to be stronger than yesterday and her patient running style is likely to be an asset on her first start at 7f, a trip that could bring improvement.

Lanwades Stud Nell Gwyn Stakes (Group 3) (Fillies)

CHELTENHAM 3.50
ANIGHTINLAMBOURN – 1pt win (10/1 generally)

After ANIGHTINLAMBOURN won at Cheltenham’s November meeting when tipped in this column I suggested that a break before a spring campaign would be a good idea, thanks to love of decent ground. He was given four months off before a crack at the Kim Muir in which soft ground prove totally unsuitable and he pulled up. It’s dried out to good (good to soft in places) today and though the ’selective watering’ is a slight worry he’ll be far happier on this sort of surface and the return to the Old Course (the Kim Muir is run on Cheltenham’s New Course) will suit.

Weatherite Air Conditioning Handicap Chase (GBB Race)

BEVERLEY 4.35
SUGARPIEHONEYBUNCH – 2.5pts win (4/1 generally)

SUGARPIEHONEYBUNCH, who opened her account at the 18th attempt when taking a 1m4f handicap at Thirsk on April 4, did well to follow up over the same trip at Catterick last week after being hemmed in on the inside rail for a large part of the race, well away from the nearside rail where the quickest ground was located. I have the daughter of Fast Company favourite in my tissue but, at the time of writing, she is the 7-2 second-in behind Big Cheese who, was arguably flattered when second at Pontefract in a race run to suit his patient style.
