2.20 Newmarket – TWILIGHT BALLET (2pt win – 3/1 with bet365)

I was happy to oppose TWILIGHT BALLET when the 6-1 shot made his debut in a 5f maiden on turf at Lingfield earlier this month, as progeny of his sire, Twilight Son, have a poor record on their debuts. Andrew Balding’s colt was also moderately drawn in stall 5 of 10 and my win and place lays looked safe when he raced five wide of the favoured rail and became outpaced two furlongs out. However, he kept on well down the wide outside to finish an eyecatching three-length third and is likely to take a big step forward this afternoon. Twilight Son progeny who were beaten but ran within seven lengths of the winner on their debuts have a 20 from 82 record at the second time of asking (+£21.85 to a £1 level stake at SP), including a two from two return for Andrew Balding (15-2 Chester winner Sunset Salute and 15-8 Beverley scorer Vetiver).

5.50 Newcastle – MULCIBER (1pt win – 6/1 with Paddy Power)

MULCIBER was a useful all-weather performer for Marco Botti and looks very interesting on his debut for in-form Dylan Cunha. His new trainer does well on the all-weather at the first time of asking with horses he takes over from other yards, scoring with three of the 12 qualifiers for a profit of £7.00 to a £1 level stake at SP. Only six of those started shorter than 8-1 and they recorded form figures of 121819 (3-6). The two unplaced horses – Mart and All About Alice – won shortly afterwards, the former on his next start and the last-named three runs later at odds of 15-2. Mulciber’s three runs for Botti on Tapeta returned form figures of 112 (2-3), with both wins here at Newcastle and the 9-1 runner-up effort at Southwell. There’s not a great deal of early pace in this 7f handicap – it will probably come from Archie Watson’s blinkered first-time Duke Wellington drawn two stalls away – and he should get a good tow into the race from that rival.
