GUSTAV GRAVES did this column a favour when scoring at Wolverhampton on Monday and I’m backing him to follow up. The Derek Shaw-trained seven-year-old can usually be relied upon to run his race at this time of year, recording 5f figures from late December until the end of February of 2131312151 (5-10), with all the wins coming after breaks of 13 days or fewer. Six of his seven all-weather wins have come at Wolverhampton, but he has won here and should get plenty of cover from his middle draw. January and February are good months to get with the yard’s all-weather runners who had the benefit of a very recent outing (six days or sooner), with nine of the 21 qualifiers scoring (since the beginning of 2021) for a profit of £16.55.

6.15 Newcastle – PHOENIX STAR (1pt ew – 14/1 bet365m 11/1 Paddy Power, 888Sport)
PHOENIX STAR was only ninth over course and distance last time, but his patient style was at a disadvantage – the first four finishers were described by the Racing Post as “prominent”, “raced in 2nd, led over 1f out”, “in touch with leaders” and “took keen hold, led against near rail”. Three-length sixth Show Me Show Me (“towards rear”) has won since, while the patiently-ridden eighth Pockley finished fourth on his next outing despite a very slow start. Jonny Peate takes over from a 5lb claimer and he’s got a good record on Jessica Macey’s veteran…
