1.40 Chester – TOUCHWOOD (1pt win – 10/1 888sport, 9/1bet365)

Several of the runners in this amateur handicap like to go from the front and it’s difficult to escape the conclusion that we’re looking at a pace collapse and the race being set up for a late closer. I’m reluctantly deserting last year’s winner OUTRUN THE STORM as he’s one of the front-runners and am instead opting for Ruth Carr’s TOUCHWOOD, reasonably drawn in stall 8 of 13. The seven-year-old arrived late on the scene to score comfortably on Lingfield’s Polytrack last time and his two previous runs at Chester produced a 9-1 win off a mark of 70 and an 18-1 third when rated 73. He runs off 69 today. ARANTES NASCIMENTO is usually a pacesetter but was ridden more patiently when a close second at Carlisle last time, on a day such tactics were unhelpful. The third from that race – Havana Rum who was also ridden patiently – went close for us at Hamilton the other day and Arantes Nascimento is worth a saver.

1.50 York – TOLSTOY (2pt win 9/2 bet365)

TOLSTOY could only finish tenth of 21 in a 6f handicap on his first trip to York last year but his three subsequent course outings produced wins over today’s 7f trip, including by two lengths in this apprentice handicap. His three course and distance wins came in big fields (16, 17 and 18 ran) and while today’s 13-runner line-up and lack of multiple front-runners might not look ideal on paper for this late closer, the fact that it’s an apprentice race should ensure a decent gallop, as these inexperienced jockeys often go off too fast. Brian Ellison’s six-year-old, who is also entered here on Saturday, could never get involved in the Victoria Cup at Ascot last time but was 50-1 and raced on the far side of the track when the action unfolded down the centre. He drops from Class 2 to Class 4 company today and his latest run at this level saw him score easily over course and distance last July.
