3.40 Sandown – LAPLANDER (1.5pt win – 8/1 bet365)
LAPLANDER, a son of Territories, is bred to appreciate the soft conditions at Sandown today and looks worth a bet on his nursery debut. Tom Ward’s gelding beat only one home at Newbury on his debut in mid-June but blew the start and ran green when 125-1 for a fast-ground 6.5f novice contest. He also displayed obvious signs of inexperience when a 100-1 tenth of 13 at Salisbury on his second start but took a step forward over 7f at Sandown on his third run, finishing a 250-1 seventh of 13 to Ruling Court and clocking a respectable speed figure in the process (the joint-second best last time out figure in today’s race according to Proform’s figures). His yard has a good recent record with handicap debutants on turf, scoring with three of the seven qualifiers this year prior to Thursday’s racing (+£15.33 to a £1 level stake at SP) and he’s forecast to start as the fifth favourite in this six-runner line-up.

5.05 Chester – MR BALOO (1pt win – 12/1 bet365)
I can make a case for a few runners in this 7f handicap but, at the prices, I have to side with Richard Hannon’s MR BALOO. The three-year-old beat only one home in Glenfinnan’s race at Sandown last time but he was drawn wider than ideal and he’s a potential improver now running on deep ground. He’s only had soft ground once before, running third to Fair Angellica and Witness Stand at Newmarket last backend, and that pair are now rated 30lb and 16lb higher respectively. The son of Kodi Bear hit form at about this time last year, winning at Salisbury in mid-September and following up at Epsom on October 1st before that eyecatching Newmarket run and his full record in handicap company in spring/autumn stands at 1131315 (4-7), with the fifth place by just a length and a half.
