3.05 Ascot – BIG MOJO (1pt win – 16/1 generally)

BIG MOJO signed off last year with a close-up fourth in the Juvenile Turf Sprint at the Breeders’ Cup and impressed me when landing the Commonwealth Cup Trial over today’s course and distance on his reappearance, as he raced in touch with the strong early pace whereas the next four finishers all came from the rear. He had more than four lengths to spare over the next prominent racer to finish and he wasn’t beaten far when a hampered fourth to Symbol Of Honour in the Sandy Lane Stakes at Haydock next time. The faster ground and return to Ascot are both in his favour and he looks over-priced.

I’ve saved on IDES OF MARCH, drawn on the wrong side when runner-up to Symbol Of Honour at Newbury on his latest outing.

15:05 Commonwealth Cup (Group 1) (No Geldings)

3.40 Ascot – HMS PRESIDENT (0.5pt e/w – 50/1 generally with the firms paying five places)

Daiquiri Bay ran a respectable 20-1 eighth of 19 when we backed him in a Royal Ascot handicap yesterday and while we didn’t collect on the place part of the bet I’m hoping that we can do so with another Alan King-trained handicapper in the Duke Of Edinburgh Stakes, namely HMS PRESIDENT. The veteran has yet to win here but has run well in defeat in all five previous visits…

4th of 14 when 33-1 for the 2020 Golden Gates (1m2f)

2nd of 10 – beaten by a head in the 2021 Shergar Cup Challenge (1m4f)

4th of 16 – hampered when placed at 7-1 in May 2022 (1m4f)

2nd of 10 – beaten by a length when 12-1 for the 2022 Shergar Cup classified stakes (1m2f)

2nd of 18 – beaten by a neck when 15-2 for this race two years ago (1m4f)

…he runs of the same mark as in 2023 and the first-time visor could help (his trainer is five from 27 with first-time visored Flat runners since the beginning of 2016 for a profit of £25.50 to a £1 level stake at SP.

15:40 Duke Of Edinburgh Stakes (Handicap) (GBBPlus Race)

4.20 Ascot – CATHEDRAL (0.5pt e/w – 66/1 bet365, Unibet, Betway, Paddy Power)

CATHEDRAL’s speed figures suggest that she doesn’t deserve to be as big as 66-1 for the Group 1 Coronation Stakes and she’s worth a speculative each-way interest. Ralph Beckett’s filly bolted up in a 6f Polytrack fillies’ maiden on her debut last September and built on that with a narrow second in the Group 3 Oh So Sharp Stakes at Newmarket the following month. She was only fourth of six in the Group 3 Chartwell Fillies’ Stakes at Lingfield on her return to action, but that form is working out incredibly well with the runner-up Jabaara, third home Spiritual and sixth-placed Fair Angellica all winning at the next time of asking (the fifth has yet to run since). Cathedral raced wider than ideal that day and it was a performance worthy of an upgrade.

16:20 Coronation Stakes (Group 1) (Fillies)

6.10 Ascot – SILVER GHOST (1pt e/w – 11/1 generally) & MISS NIGHTFALL (1pt e/w –11/1 bet365, six places)

Emma Lavelle’s SILVER GHOST smashed the clock when coming from off the pace to land a hot 7f handicap at Newmarket’s Guineas meeting, a win that was doubly impressive as the tailwind made such tactics difficult to pull off. That form was franked when the runner-up Solar Army and fifth-placed Gilet ran one-two (15-2 and 11-1) at Newbury next time. Silver Ghost herself gave the form another boost when defying a 6lb higher mark at Goodwood next time, beating MISS NIGHTFALL by two and a half lengths into second. She clocked another quick time and a further 8lb rise could still underestimate her ability.

I also want to support the Goodwood runner-up MISS NIGHTFALL, who could be very well drawn in stall 28. James Fanshawe’s filly recorded a good speed figure for that effort, has the assistance of Oisin Murphy and will appreciate the return to a straight track.

17:00 Sandringham Stakes (Fillies’ Handicap)
