1.25 Newbury – MAELSTROM (1pt win – 9/1 William Hill, 17/2 BetVictor, Sky Bet)
The William Haggas-trained MAELSTROM, owned by Cheveley Park Stud, looked largely clueless when making his debut in a 6f novice contest at Haydock 15 days ago where he trailed home last of the five runners after a slow start (beaten by just under eight lengths). The yard’s previous runners from sire Night Of Thunder were all beaten on their debuts, including Irish Champion Stakes winner Economics, but three scored at the second time of asking and the market looks to have over-reacted to that initial run. He actually clocked a respectable speed figure (according to Proform’s ratings) for that Haydock run and I’m expecting major improvement this afternoon.

3.40 Ayr – GUTSY GIRL (1pt win – 15/2 bet365, 13/2 generally)
Yesterday’s racing at Ayr suggested a strong draw bias favouring low-to-middle numbers on the sprint course and the Charlie Fellowes-trained GUTSY GIRL (stall 1 of 13) could be well berthed in this 5.5f Listed contest. The Daughter of Blue Point was a big eyecatcher in the 5f fillies’ nursery at York’s Ebor meeting where she did well to finish second of 14 behind easy winner Star Of Lady M from a poor high draw in stall 14 (non-runner adjusted). Her other runs in fields of nine or more runners produced a wide-margin 6f Carlise win on good to firm ground, a half-length third of 11 at Windsor, again on good to firm (6f), and a comfortable 6f Kempton success. The step back up in trip, albeit by just half a furlong, looks sure to suit
4.15 Ayr – ETERNAL SUNSHINE (1pt win – 5/1 generally)
ETERNAL SUNSHINE (stall 16 of 25) might be drawn a shade higher than ideal in the Broze Cup, but she still looks to have plenty in hand from the handicapper and she scored snuggly here yesterday despite the narrow margin of victory. Jim Goldie’s four-year-old was well beaten on her seasonal/handicap debut at Musselburgh on June 1st but has since recorded form figures of 41112121 (5-8), with the runner-up efforts by a neck and a head. Last time out winners have a good recent record in this race and she could prove hard to beat.
