12.30 Chepstow – PASSING KATE (1pt ew – 9/1 bet365, 8/1 generally)
PASSING KATE was sent off as the 1-2 favourite for a mares’ handicap hurdle when reappearing at Leicester on December 5th and had little difficulty in justifying those skinny odds, scoring by ten lengths from Twyford’s Diamond. Matt Sheppard’s seven-year-old raced in the ‘swamp’ on the inside rail throughout and was value for at least double the winning margin. This consistent individual now has form figures for her current yard of 5512313231 (3-10), improving to 5113231 (3-7) over trips of about 2m only. All three wins came against her own sex, but I still want to back her against the boys today as she looks to have been underrated in the betting.

7.30 Wolverhampton – ENGLISH SPIRIT (2pt win – 4/1 bet365, Paddy Power)
ENGLISH SPIRIT disappointed over a slightly shorter trip here last month, finishing sixth of ten, but was stuck out wide from stall 7 of 10 and I’m happy to forgive that effort. Heather Main’s six-year-old has won five of his 13 starts at this venue and his record here when drawn between stalls 2 and 6 reads 1211 (3-4), with the defeat by a head. He has stall 5 today which should allow him to adopt his usual prominent role, and he can track like pace angle Finn Russell (stall 3) before pouncing in the straight.

Andrew Mount’s Myth Busters – Does Cheltenham Form Translate from the Old Course to the New Course?
We have a two-day Cheltenham meeting to get stuck into at the end of the week (Friday/Saturday) where the action switches from the Old Course – used during October/November – to the New Course.
