2.30 Newbury – HELTENHAM (1.5pt win – 4/1 William Hill, 7/2 generally) & LORD BADDESLEY (0.5pt win, 20/1 BetVictor, Ladbrokes)
The Dan Skelton-trained HELTENHAM enjoys galloping tracks, especially Newbury, and is worth a bet to make it four wins from four course outings. When running on tracks described by Proform as ‘sharp’ his record reads 0223828 (0-7) but at other venues his figures are more impressive – 32111F111F (6-10) for a profit of £15.29 to a £1 level stake at SP.
I’ve also backed LORD BADDESLEY, one of two I tipped in the Badger Beer Handicap Chase at Wincanton last time. The nine-year-old, who was making his debut for Anthony Honeyball, took a massive late walk in the betting and looked ill at ease on the right-handed track, hanging to his left throughout. He ran second to Inch House in the 2m6f handicap chase (run on Saturday) at this two-day meeting last year and is 2lb lower this time around.

3.20 Thurles – PHOENIX COWBOY (1pt ew – 6/1 bet365)
The inside of the hurdles course was badly cut up at Roscommon’s meeting on September 30th and Its Not Over Yet, winner of the 3m handicap hurdle, challenged widest of all in the straight. Runner-up Sarah Beara also took the scenic route and both were beaten next time. PHOENIX COWBOY, sent off at 33-1, raced in the ‘swamp’ throughout and remained in contention for longer than he was entitled to, before weakening into ninth place, and was the one to take from that race. He finished a creditable sixth of 13 at Limerick next time when ridden by a 7lb conditional jockey and caught the eye over today’s 2m4f trip at Fairyhouse last time, doing best of the closers in third when amateur ridden. Darragh O’Keeffe, who rode winners at 40-1 and 5-2 here yesterday, takes the ride and improvement looks likely. I’ve saved on pace angle Willywampus, who fared best of the prominent racers when fourth over 2m here last week.

Andrew Mount’s Myth Busters – Front Runners Are Strongly Favoured at Leicester
We are often told that certain tracks favour front-runners, but hurdle and chase courses can ride very differently, and we can’t always group these races together when considering the ideal running style for a particular venue. Leicester is a case in point, and I want to use this article to examine what’s required to win…
