3.28 Newcastle – KITAAB (1pt win – 7/2 bet365)
I want to oppose last time out course and distance scorer Muscika, who looked flattered by that January 11th success as the front-runners never came back to the field (the winner and runner-up raced one-two throughout) when there was virtually no wind. He’s unlikely to get his own way in front this time and I prefer the claims of hold-up performer KITAAB, who clocked a good time when chasing home Many A Star (winner again since) in a Class 4 handicap at Wolverhampton last time. The return to this straight course will suit – his two runs here have produced a win and a narrow second (beaten by a nose) – , he drops in grade and the Phil Kirby yard is in good form.

3.58 Newcastle – DREAM ILLUSION (0.5pt ew – 20/1 bet365)
The Karl Burke-trained DREAM ILLUSION ran green but shaped with promise when a 25-1 seventh of ten in a 6f fillies’ novice contest at Southwell on her recent debut and can be expected to take a step forward today. Her trainer does well on the all-weather with three-year-olds having their second career start, scoring with 21 of the 85 qualifiers since the beginning of 2010 (24.7% strike-rate) for a huge profit of £105.53 to a £1 level stake at SP (expected winners = 13.53, A/E = 1.565). Those who were brought back to the track within three weeks of their debut were 13 from 33 in the same period (39.4%) for a profit of £118.75.
4.29 Newcastle – VOLENTI (1pt win – 5/2 bet365)
VOLENTI had no chance against the track bias here on January 11th and could never strike a blow behind front-running 33-1 winner Showhound, finishing sixth of eight. I made him a bet here ten days later and he ran a blinder in another race in which the pacesetters never came back, doing best of the closers in third. There should be a decent gallop on thanks to the presence of Rebecca’s Girl, who helped make the pace for Volenti when the pair finished one-two here in December. Cusack, who also ran well against the bias in the same race as Volenti last time (finishing fifth), looks the one for the forecast.
