2.00 Epsom – NEW CHARTER (1pt win – 15-8 bet365, William Hill)

Richard Hannon’s 7-1 shot NEW CHARTER ran a promising race on her debut when chasing home 8-13 favourite Mountain Breeze in a novice contest at Newmarket earlier this month, having been backed from the early 16-1 into 7-1. Hannon is now five from 22 (+£16.00) with progeny of New Bay and it’s interesting to note that one of them, La Guarida, debuted in the same Newmarket race last year, finishing third before winning at odds of 7-1 just a week later. His other New Bays have also come to hand early – Lulworth Cove ran second at 10-1 on her second outing before getting off the mark at Wolverhampton next time (7-2), while Persica scored at 10-1 on his second career outing, just three days after his debut defeat. The yard has a great record in the Woodcote Stakes, Epsom’s opener on Friday, and she could prove hard to beat.

3.00 Chepstow – SARAH’S VERSE (1pt win – 11/4 bet365, William Hill)

SARAH’S VERSE thrives at this time of year and her last-time-out 5.7f Bath win took her record in April/May, over trips shy of 6f, to 11121356141 (6-11) for a profit of £24.50 to a £1 level stake at SP. All the wins came at left-handed Bath, but she has form on straight tracks and will relish the likely strong gallop with front-runners Howzak and Connie’s Rose, who set the race up for her nicely last time, in opposition.

7.45 Doncaster – TIGER CRUSADE (1pt win – 15/2 bet365)

The early pace was far side in the 6f Class 2 Newcastle handicap won by Misty Grey on May 12th, favouring low draws. Those ridden patiently from high draws could never get into contention and the first five finishers came from stalls 1, 2, 4, 3 and 5 of 14, with four of them prominent throughout. TIGER CRUSADE (‘in rear, still plenty to do 2f out’) kept on well from his stall 9 draw after being switched to challenge on the far side and though beaten by almost eight lengths into sixth, his effort was worthy of a major uplift. David Simcock’s seven-year-old has a split mark – he’s rated 94 on the all-weather compared to only 87 on turf – but has a superior strike-rate on turf and looks interesting in this 6f handicap. The drop to Class 4 level will suit and his only previous outing on Doncaster’s straight course produced a 7f win, albeit back in 2020.
