2.30 Lingfield – PERFECT RUBY (1pt win – 10/1 bet365, 9/1 William Hill)
Richard Hannon’s PERFECT RUBY wouldn’t be an obvious bet having finished 12th of 13 at Chelmsford just four days ago but the first-time blinkers could make a difference, and the small field could also prove helpful. Her trainer has a good record when bringing a runner back to the track within six days of its previous outing, scoring with 22 of the 105 qualifiers in the past five years for a profit of £43.56 to a £1 level stake at SP. Those who finished fifth or worse last time out were 11 from 36 for a profit of £57.83. The yard’s record with first-time blinkers has declined in recent years but the qualifiers are still profitable to back blind and the two runners who lined up in this headgear at Chelmsford on Saturday both ran well (second at 18-1 and fourth at 22-1).

7.00 Wolverhampton – HAVANA SKY (1pt win – 9/2 William Hill, Ladbrokes, Unibet) & INVINCIBLE SPEED (0.5pt win – 8/1 generally
Stall 1 is a slight concern where HAVANA SKY is concerned but Ed Dunlop’s hold-up performer will need to be switched off the inside rail to challenge and should end up with clear daylight down the middle of the track, which is where the majority of recent handicap winners at this venue have raced. The four-year-old is unbeaten in two previous course visits and was an eyecatcher over 7f at Lingfield last time, racing in the ‘swamp’ on the inside rail for the first five furlongs. He kept on well once switched wider but the winner, runner-up and third, who all raced off the ‘dead’ rail throughout, got first run on him. His two-length defeat was a solid effort in the circumstances, and he’ll be happier back at 6f, the distance over which all six of his career wins have been achieved. I’ve saved on INVINCIBLE SPEED, who has been gelded ahead of his debut for in-form Mark Loughnane. The four-year-old was unbeaten in two starts over course and distance when trained by James Tate and his new handler has a useful record on the all-weather at the first time of asking with horses he takes over from other yards.
7.30 Wolverhampton – TYKE (1pt win – 1.5pt win, 5/1 generally)
TYKE recorded a fast time when fifth to the progressive Ormolulu in a 6f Class 5 Southwell handicap nine days ago, doing second best of those to come from off the pace. That form has already been boosted by the sixth – 2-1 favourite Rebel Empire – who caused a 20-1 shock when taking a Class 3 handicap at Chelmsford on Saturday. Mick Appleby’s five-year-old drops down to Class 6 level tonight and, though yet to win at Dunstall Park (his three all-weather victories have come at Southwell), he has only visited on two prior occasions, failing to see out the 7f trip when tenth of 12 in October 2023 (he also pulled hard) and finished a two-length third of five when the very small field/steady gallop didn’t play to his strengths. There looks to be plenty of early pace in tonight’s eight-runner line-up and the race should be run to suit.
