3.35 Pontefract – QITAAL (1pt win – 9/2 generally)
QITAAL returned from his winter break with a solid 12-1 third of 16 in a 1m2f handicap at Doncaster last month, doing well to finish so close on a day the strong wind made life difficult for prominent racers. Charlie Johnston’s six-year-old was a close-up fifth on turning into Doncaster’s long straight and the four who were in front of him at the time finished 14th, 13th, 11th and 10th. Softer going would have been preferable but he could get loose on the lead and prove hard to catch.
5.35 Pontefract – OPAL STORM (0.5pt e/w – 11/1 Sky Bet, four places, 12/1 three places elsewhere)
OPAL STORM would have needed the run when a 22-1 12th of 17 in a 5f handicap at Doncaster last month where the flat course wouldn’t have been ideal. Brian Rothwell’s mare is much happier on stiff tracks and her combined record at Beverley, Carlisle and Pontefract reads 5916442143 (2-10) with the wins at 66-1 and 13-2. Her sole start over today’s course and distance produced a 6-1 third of ten in which she fared best of those to come from off the pace and best of those drawn in the top half of the field.
7.10 Warwick – ALLBETSOFF (1pt win – 8/1 888sport, 7/1 bet365, William Hill)
I’m not hugely keen on those at the head of the market for this 2m3f handicap hurdle – 9-4 favourite GRAHAM has been beaten at odds of 6-4f and 6-5f the last twice and now wears first-time blinkers, admittedly a positive statistical pointer for the Gary Moore yard but not certain to suit this quirky type, and 7-2 second-in ROCK ON TOMMY tends to get going when the race is all but over and hasn’t won away from Uttoxeter since December 2021. Take the pair on with ALLBETSOFF shaped well at Market Rasen last month on his second start following a wind operation, finishing a nine-length fifth of ten over the extended 2m4f trip and found the drop to 2m1f against him when fourth at Sedgefield next time. He’s likely to be prominent in a race largely devoid of early pace and has form at this venue.
