4.00 Chepstow – SAVANNAH SMILES (1pt win – 3/1 bet365)
SAVANNAH SMILES has run well at Chepstow in all three runs this season, finishing second by a head to Street Life (winner followed up) in a 5f handicap on his reappearance on May 13th, third by half a length over today’s 6f trip just eight days later and, last time, running third by a length and a half in another 5f handicap and doing best of those to come from off the pace when it paid to race on the front end. That course and distance run on her penultimate start was especially eyecatching, as she was drawn on the outside of the track in stall 1 when it paid to race near the stands’ rail (first two drawn 9 and 6 of 9). Two of the other badly-berthed runners from that contest have franked the form – fifth-placed Silky Robin won at Brighton next time and seventh-placed Malham Tarn Cove finished a close-up 11-1 third at Leicester. Grace Harris’s mare will handle today’s slower going (good, good to soft in places) and she can get the better of stablemate and main danger CONNIE’S ROSE, the likely pace angle from stall 7 of 9.
7.18 Kilbeggan – ANYWAY (1pt win – 13/8 generally)
I wasn’t expecting to get involved in a 2m4f beginners’ chase at Kilbeggan on the eve of Royal Ascot but ANYWAY looks worth a punt after his 125-1 second of 19 to Caldwell Potter in the novices’ handicap chase at Cheltenham on his latest start. That race has worked out well, with four winners from 14 subsequent runners for a profit of £10.75 to a £1 level stake at SP and five of the others also made the frame. The seven-year-old’s three wins call came in late spring/summer and his record in cheekpieces on yielding or faster ground reads 151PF1252 (3-9).
7.40 Wolverhampton – OUTER EDGE (1.5pt win – 10/1 bet365, 9/1 888sport, 17/2 William Hill)
OUTER EDGE was well drawn in stall 11 of 14 in So Smart’s race at Lingfield (5f, turf) last time but he ended up on the slower ground down the middle of the track after hanging to his left, coming home just under eight lengths behind the winner in tenth place. Several horses who also raced down the middle that day have done well since – Level Up (seventh from stall 7) and Angle Land (eighth from stall 6) both won at the next time of asking, Twilight Madness (fifth from stall 9) ran third at Chelmsford, Maharajas Express (ninth from stall 3) has finished second in both subsequent starts, Merrimack (11th from stall 4) has made the frame in three subsequent runs, while Kalik (12th from stall 2) finished a solid 50-1 fifth at Chelmsford before returning to Lingfield’s turf course to win at 7-2. OUTER EDGE won over course and distance on his penultimate start, clocking a good time in the process, and the market has over-reacted to that Lingfield reverse.
