2.55 Kempton – EXOPLANET (0.5pt e/w – 33/1 generally)

My latest ‘Andrew’s Angles’ column (which will appear on the GG website on Tuesday) discuses trainers who do well at the first time of asking with horses they take over from other handlers and one name that stands out is Arche Watson. He has a 41 from 178 record (23.0% strike-rate) under such conditions for a profit of £63.82 to a £1 level stake at SP. That strike-rate improves to eight from 26 (30.8%) with horses on their first start since a gelding operation and EXOPLANET qualifies in this 1m2f Listed contest. The son of Sea The Stars has been off the track for 669 days since his second in the Group 3 Hampton Court Stakes for Roger Varian at Royal Ascot in 2023 but has run well on both previous seasonal debuts, scoring at Newbury at two and finishing second to Military Order (re-opposes today) at three. Plenty of those winning ‘switchers’ came for owners Hambleton Racing and Watson is 1-1 with horses he has taken over from Varian.

3.40 Redcar – CIRCE (1pt win – 3/1 generally)

CIRCE raced keenly just off the pace in a 7f handicap at Doncaster last month and took up the running plenty soon enough. Richard Hannon’s four-year-old, described by the Racing Post as “took keen hold, in touch with leaders, headway over 2f out, led over 1f out, headed inside final furlong, no extra inside final 110 yards”, was passed by three late closers who received the close-up comments “held up in rear”, “held up in rear” and “towards rear”, doing well to finish so close in the circumstances. She had two and a half lengths to spare over the next prominent racer to cross the line and Redcar, where the breeze is forecast to be behind the runners in the straight today, will suit. She’s yet to win outside of fillies-only company but both her wins came over a straight 7f and she’s worth a small bet. That headwind-affected Doncaster 30th March meeting has thrown up a host of subsequent winners and simply backing all those who contested another turf race on their next start would have found eight winners form 29 bets for a profit of £24.20 to a £1 level stake at SP, with the bulk of the profit coming from those who led or raced prominently last time out.

4.05 Kempton – METAVERSE (1pt win – 5/1 bet365, 9/2 generally)

METAVERSE ran in the same 7f handicap as Circe (see above) at Doncaster on 30th March, going off as the 9-4 favourite but finishing seventh after also doing too much too soon (“took keen hold, in touch with leaders, headway and pressed leaders over 1f out, weakened inside final furlong”). David Menusier’s five-year-old won’t be inconvenienced by the return to Kempton’s Polytrack – his two runs over course and distance produced a novice win and a 10-1 neck second in handicap company – and he should be able to get cover behind pace angles DANCING MAGIC and AHLAIN.

16:05 Virgin Bet Daily Extra Places Handicap

4.07 Chepstow – COME ON NIA (1pt e/w – 16/1 generally)

COME ON NIA ran a respectable race in the Grade 2 limited mares’ novices’ handicap hurdle at Newbury last month when I advised her each-way, finishing a 20-1 fifth of 15 to Sio Geal. Andrew Martin’s six-year-old drops back to down to Class 4 handicap level today and her full record in the March to May period reads 115 (2-3). Since 2017, backing the yard’s handicap runners would have found 29 winners from 192 bets (15.1%) for a profit of £116.56 to a £1 level stake at SP.
