5.00 Wolverhampton – TOP OF THE CLASS (1pt win, 5/2 bet365)
Gaiety Musical won on the Polytrack surface at Kempton last time, appreciating the step back up to 1m, but it remains to be seen whether she can repeat that effort on Tapeta. Her sole run on this surface resulted in a modest sixth place at Southwell (albeit over 6f) on the back of another good run at Kempton and she very much had the run of the race last time, sitting just behind the leaders, whereas the one-length runner-up, TOP OF THE CLASS, made her challenge from last place. Richard Kingscote who rides Gaiety Musical hasn’t got the best recent record on last-time out winners – just eight winners from 86 rides in the past 12 months (9.3% strike-rate) for a loss of £60.50 to a £1 level stake at SP (expected winners = 13.90, A/E = 0.58) – and I’m going to take Top Of The Class to reverse the form. She too is arguably best at Kempton, but her patient style will be an asset given the forecast strong winds and she has drifted to what I consider to be a value price.

7.00 Wolverhampton – JIMMY KNOCKER (1pt win, 9/2 generally)
Simply backing Andi Brown’s all-weather handicappers has been a profitable exercise throughout the trainer’s career, with 15 winners from 109 runners (13.8%) for a profit of £34.00 to a £1 level stake at SP. JIMMY KNOCKER contributed with a comfortable Newcastle success last time out, building on his handicap debut 33-1 fourth at Southwell on what was also his first start since a gelding operation. The four-year-old remains open to heaps of further improvement and the form of that Newcastle win has been franked by subsequent wins from the runner-up and third. The fourth and fifth from that race ran well when runner-up/third (17-2 and 14-1) in a similar contest on January 21st and given the likely strong pace and the wind factor, his patient style will be an asset tonight.

Andrew Mount’s Cheltenham Focus – Spotlight on Stayers’ Hurdle
Having looked at a handicap in my latest Cheltenham column, I’m keeping it simple this week and turning my attention to the Paddy Power Stayers’ Hurdle. I can make an educated guess as to who is likely to turn up for this three-mile Grade 1 contest and by using stats/trends and horse profiling I’m hoping…
