3.15 Lingfield – SAX APPEAL (1pt win – 10/1 William Hill, bet365) & YOUTHFUL KING (0.5pt win – 4/1 generally)
SAX APPEAL trailed home last of eight when 7-4 favourite at Southwell on March 14th but did too much too soon under Joe Fanning in a race set up for the closers. The first four home were all ridden patiently and all were beaten next time out but the prominently-ridden sixth Without Compromise finished a close-up third at 10-1 on his next start and seventh-placed Tides Of War (“prominent, pressed leader back straight”), beaten by 18 lengths, was a 25-1 winner at the next time of asking. SAX APPEAL will hopefully be ridden less aggressively under Oliver Stammers today, as there are other pace angles in the race, but still looks over-priced. I’ve saved on overnight mover YOUTHFUL KING, back down to Class 4 level for the first time since his course and distance success last autumn.
6.40 Naas – MAGICAL VISION (0.5pt e/w – 40/1 generally) – UNEXPECTED ISSUES (0.5pt e/w – 50/1 generally)
I want to oppose BIG GOSSEY (4-1 at the time of writing) in this 5f Listed contest, as he drops back from 7f after his Curragh win on March 29th where he looked flattered as he raced up with the pace (the tailwind made life very difficult for hold-up horses that day). MY MATE ALFIE (13-8 joint-favourite) is an obvious alternative having signed off with three wins last autumn, including one over course and distance at Listed level, but he’s tasted defeat on his two previous seasonal debuts and might need this. TWO STARS (13-8 joint-favourite) may also have been flattered by racing on the front end when landing a 5f handicap at the Curragh’s March 29th meeting (albeit he did score with plenty in hand) and I’m going to take on the front three in the market with two outsiders. MAGICAL VISION was only seventh to Two Stars in that 5f handicap at the Curragh, but he tried to come from the rear in that tailwind-affected contest and would have needed the run, his first since accounting for Two Stars over the same track and trip in April 2024. Softer ground would have been preferable but he’s two from two here and looks over-priced. The Fozzy Stack-trained UNEXPEDCTED ISSUES, a stablemate of MY MATE ALFIE is also worth a small interest. She faces a tough task on her three-year-old debut but is drawn in stall 1 (like four of the past ten winners), was a winner on her juvenile debut and progeny of Starspangledbanner often go well after a break at three, with those rested for 150 days or longer landing 21 of their 115 turf starts (18.3%) for a profit of £98.97 to a £1 level stake at SP. Stack has sent out 13 runners on this angle, with three winning and four more finishing second.

Andrew’s Angles – How to Find Early-season Profits with Two-Year-Olds
With Cheltenham and Aintree behind us I’m going to turn my attention to the Flat turf season and attempt to identify some profitable angles. Two-year-old races can be a turn-off for punters at this time of year as we’re usually dealing with a host of unraced horses but there are plenty of winner-finding angles… Foaling…
