2.00 Haydock – CREAM OF THE WEST (1pt win – 9/2 bet365)
CREAM OF THE WEST was beaten on his comeback at Hexham last term before scoring in a fast time at Ayr on his second start/handicap hurdle debut and progressed further after that success, dead-heating for a close second at Ayr where he was left with too much to do and scoring on heavy ground at Hexham. The ‘tacky’ ground was blamed when he pulled up at Haydock on his final run last term. He’s had a similar prep this time around – reappearing at Hexham where he finished a respectable 14-1 sixth of 14 on his chase debut, doing well to recover after a bad mistake at the second fence, and he should be fitter today.

7.30 Wolverhampton – PORT ERIN (1pt win – 9/2 bet365)
Tony Carroll’s PORT ERIN, who defied a late market drift (13-2 from 9-2) to land division two of the Sky Bet Extra Places Every Day Handicap at Chelmsford on December 5th, was the only winner on the night to race anywhere near the front end in the early stages and can be backed to follow up. That form was boosted when the front-runner, 15-8 favourite H Key Lails, won by two lengths at odds of 12-1 at Lingfield last week. I’d be more confident were this on Polytrack but the four-year-old has won on Tapeta (at Newcastle last summer) and did run second overt 7f on his penultimate start despite being stuck out wide in stall 11.
