5.30 Wolverhampton – WATKINS (1pt win – 9-1 bet365, 17-2 William Hill)
George Boughey ran two handicap debutants in the 1m Class 5 handicap for three-year-olds at Southwell on January 17th – 11-4 favourite McKenna and 16-1 shot WATKINS – and both ran poorly, with the first-named fading into eighth place after racing keenly and Watkins trailing home last of ten after also failing to settle. It was an advantage to be drawn low that day – the first four home were drawn in stalls 2, 3, 4 and 1 – and Watkins had the worst of it in stall 10. The market drift was another clue as to how he was going to run and it’s safe to draw a line through that effort. The son of Due Diligence had started as the 5-2 favourite at Yarmouth on his debut last summer before running a stinker (last of 13) but showed more in the first-time hood at Brighton next time and didn’t look devoid of promise when a 125-1 seventh in a 1m Yarmouth maiden on his third run. His sire’s progeny often respond well to headgear and the blinkers go on for the first time today. The cut back to 7f could also help and with McKenna leaving that poor Southwell win well behind with a 10-1 victory over today’s course and distance on his next start, Watkins looks worth chancing to do the same.

6.30 Wolverhampton – GUSTAV GRAVES (1pt win – 4-1 generally)
GUSTAV GRAVES has a fine record in 5f handicaps at Wolverhampton from late December until the end of February, recording form figures under such conditions of 1311211 (5-7). The third place (15-2) was excusable as the front-runners never came back to the field and he did best of those to come from off the pace, and it was a similar story for the other defeat – a best-of-the-closers 12-1 second behind an all-the-way winner. I took a chance and bet him at Newcastle last time but, while he ran well in a half-length second, that straight course is not ideal, and he’ll be much happier back at this left-handed venue. On paper, Wedgewood and POP DANCER should ensure a strong gallop (albeit they are stablemates and might not take each other on), which is why I’m saving on Pop Dancer who caught the eye when a 28-1 fifth against the ‘dead’ inside rail at Lingfield last time.
