1.50 Newcastle – SMOKERINGTHEDARK (1pt win – 5/2 generally)
Point to point winner SMOKERINGINTHEDARK made a successful debut under rules at Musselburgh in December, landing a 2m4f maiden hurdle by half a length from Jet To Vegas despite failing to settle. That form has been well advertised by the runner-up, who went one better at Ayr the following month and doubled up in the Grade 2 Premier Novices’ Hurdle at Kelso on Saturday. Nicky Richards’ five-year-old disappointed when returned to Musselburgh for his next start, finishing fourth of the five runners, but probably failed to see out the 3m trip and was too far out of his ground anyway. The order hardly changed throughout the race – the winner made all and the runner-up raced in second place – and the form was boosted when third-placed Bold Light also won at Kelso on Saturday. Smokeringinthedark will appreciate the cut back to 2m4f and should get a reasonable pace to attack courtesy of Ailt An Chorrain.

6.30 Wolverhampton – BAZBALL (1pt win – 10/1 bet365)
BAZBALL is on a long losing run but caught the eye on her debut for the Joel Parkinson and Sue Smith yard at Newcastle in late January, clocking a fast time with a 66-1 fourth of ten behind Mesaafi when fitted with first-time cheekpieces. That form has received a few minor boosts – the winner was only beaten by a short head and a nose when third at Kempton on his next start, the runner-up finished a close-up fourth after meeting with interference at Southwell, the third, Tomorrow Day, has made the frame in his four subsequent starts, fifth-placed Dicko The Legend has finished third and second, latterly by a head, and the sixth-placed runner found only one too good when 12-1 at Southwell on her next assignment. Bazball, well drawn in stall 2, has been dropped 1lb to a mark of 62 for that effort and is now 6lb lower than when scoring over 5f here for Karl Burke in August 2023. That was over 5f, but she kept on well to finish a two-length fourth over course and distance off 77 later the same year and will appreciate running against her own sex (she’s had surprisingly few goes in fillies-only company).

Andrew Mount’s Cheltenham Focus – Punting Angles for the Mares’ Chase
Regular viewers of GG’s Weekend Watch will know that I enjoy mares-only races as there some punting angles that often get overlooked and help us to find value selections. We have three races confined to mares at the Cheltenham festival – the 2m1f Grade 2 novices’ hurdle, the 2m4f Grade 1 hurdle and the 2m4.5f…
