2.35 Ayr – TOMMY COMBATS (1.5pt win – 9/4 William Hill) & ARDERA CROSS (0.5pt win, 16/1 generally)
TOMMY COMBATS was a huge eyecatcher when fourth at Carlisle on his chase/seasonal debut in November, coming from well off the pace to finish just over nine lengths behind the winner in a race dominated by the front-runners. Martin Todhunter’s six-year-old broke his duck at Hexham next time and can take another step forward.
I’ve saved on old boy ARDERA CROSS, who did us a favour when a 14-1 course and distance winner at this time last year. He’s a 14-year-old now but a spin over hurdles earlier this week will have put him spot on and he looks set to receive an easy led. He’s five from 10 over track and trip in the January to March period (+£22.88 to a £1 level stake at SP), including three from four when returned to the track within a fortnight.

7.30 Wolverhampton – GUSTAV GRAVES (2pts win – 9/4 generally) & BASHOLO (0.5pt e/w, 9/1 Bet365, 8/1 Sky Bet, both four places)
GUSTAV GRAVES tends to come good at this time of year and has an especially good record over the 5f trip at Wolverhampton when he’s had a recent outing. Derek Shaw’s seven-year-old has is four from 12 over course and distance (+£6.50 to a £1 level stake at SP) when returned to the track within 15 days of his latest outing, improving to four from seven in the December to February period (+£11.50). Those figures improve again to 21111 (4-5) when drawn between stalls 3 and 8 (+£13.50) and this hold-up performer, well berthed in stall 5, looks set to encounter the required strong pace.
I also want to bet Stella Barclay’s BASHOLO (stall 6), despite her 28-1 seventh of 11 over course distance last time. The six-year-old has done well on the back of a defeat for her current trainer, landing six of her 32 starts for a profit of £5.08 to a £1 level stake at SP. Since the start of last year nine of those runs took place at Wolverhampton, producing form figures of 313211331 (4-9) for a profit of £15.25, suggesting each-way claims this evening.
