Just over one year ago THE NORTHERNLIGHTS finished a staying on 66-1 fifth of 15 to The Kemble Brewery in a Class 2 bumper at Cheltenham when trained by Georgina Nicholls. That form has received multiple boosts with the winner now rated 130 after scoring twice over hurdles and runner-up Valgrand on a mark of 139 after three hurdle wins, including a 17-length romp in Grade 2 company. The fourth, sixth, eighth, tenth, 12th and 14th have all scored at least once since and though The Northernlights has yet to win he has shown promise on occasions, including an 8-1 third of 13 on soft ground at Warwick in March where the 2m trip looked very much on the short side. The five-year-old was well backed on his debut for in-form Sandy Thomson at Kelso in early October but he had little left at the business end after racing keenly and came home 24 lengths behind the winner in sixth place. That run, his first since April, was likely needed and his stable has a good record at the second time of asking with stable switchers, scoring with 16 of the 63 qualifiers since the beginning of 2017 for a profit of £101.13 to a £1 level stake at SP. The step up to 2m4f should suit.

3.30 Lingfield – GALLIC GEORDIE (1pt win – 4/1 Betfair, 7/2 generally)
Course expert GALLIC GEORDIE has yet to race this season, but this is his time of year, and he can make a winning reappearance in this veteran’s handicap chase. Sam Drinkwater’s 11-year-old has form figures in handicap company during November/December of 11112F25135 (5-11), improving to 1112 (3-4) in Class 4 or lower company. The mud-lover also has a fine record at Lingfield, with form figures of 1112F (3-5) and he’s worth a small interest despite the 2m4f trip being at the upper limits of his stamina range.
