2.30 Ascot – KYLIE OF LOCHALSH (0.5pt ew – 150/1 William Hill)

The Gay Kelleway-trained KYLIE OF LOCHALSH is a huge price for the Albany Stakes, but there was enough promise here on her debut last month to suggest she’s worth a small interest. The daughter of Kodi Bear was sent off at 22-1 for a 5f fillies’ maiden won by Miss Rascal, who went on to run a cracking race in the Queen Mary on Wednesday, finishing fifth of 24 behind Leovanni. Runner-up Naana’s Diamond landed a 6f Listed race in Italy next time, third-placed Dolce Vitta bolted up by five lengths in a 6f Redcar maiden and the fifth/sixth, beaten by ten and 12.75 lengths respectively, both finished second next time. Kyle Of Lochalsh was beaten by just over seven lengths but she’s sure to improve for that and has the assistance of Hayley Turner who rides the straight Ascot course so well. Her sire’s 14 juveniles to run at Ascot (any meeting) have produced two winners (22-1 shot Leovanni in the Queen Mary and 6-1 Go Bears Go), as well as two seconds (20-1 and 6-1), three fourths (22-1, 7-1 and 11-2) and a 125-1 sixth of 18 in the 2020 Queen Mary. Stall 2 of 17 might not be ideal but we’re never going to tick all boxes when playing at these sort of prices.

Albany Stakes (Group 3) (Fillies)

3.05 Ascot – JASOUR (1pt win – 11/2 bet365)

3.05 Ascot – MALC (0.5pt ew – 20/1 bet365, William Hill)

Stall 1 is a concern for my antepost pick Inisherin and he makes limited appeal at 9-2, especially now the ground has dried out (it was soft when he won the Temple Stakes). JASOUR, who clocked a fast time when scoring over course and distance last time, is one of two I want to back in the race. That took his record for Jim Crowley to two wins from two starts and he was winning despite, not because of, the good to soft going. Today’s quick surface looks ideal and while he can still race with the choke out, he’ll get cover behind pace angles Starlust and Inisherin (he’s drawn between the pair). The each-way play at a much bigger price is MALC for the Richard Fahey yard. He likes fast ground and was second of 14 when 66-1 for last season’s Norfolk Stakes. The son of Calyx has yet to win over this trip, but he stayed it well enough when fourth of 14 to Elite Status at Newbury last time where he did best of those drawn high.

Commonwealth Cup (Group 1) (British Champions Series) (No Geldings)

3.45 Ascot – SEE THE FIRE (0.5pt ew – 33/1 Sky Bet, four palaces, 33/1 William Hull three places)

It was a big advantage to challenge late/wide in the 1000 Guineas at Newmarket last month where the first three finishers were drawn 16, 15 and 11 of 16 with the winner and runner-up described by the Racing Post as ‘dwelt start, raced in last’ and ‘midfield’. We’ve already seen two badly berthed 1000 Guineas runners win big races next time – eighth-placed Fallen Angel (stall 5) comfortably landed the Irish 1,000 Guineas, while Darnation (14th from stall 2) was successful in the German equivalent. SEE THE FIRE was sent off at just 15-2 when drawn in stall 2 at Newmarket where she weakened into a 14-length 12th but she’s better than that and looks worth a small each-way interest.

Coronation Stakes (Group 1) (British Champions Series) (Fillies)

4.25 Ascot – BAGUE D’OR (1pt ew -12/1 bet365, William Hill)

Like with the 1m4f King George V Handicap yesterday, a patient ride from a high draw should be just the ticket and BAGUE D’OR, drawn top of the shop in stall 22, certainly fits the bill. The six-year-old has recorded form figures since gelded of 121622112241 (5-12), with the sixth place excusable as he made the running. He won well over 1m6f at Newmarket last time, has won on his only previous visit to this venue and his stamina will come into play late.
