1.30 Chelmsford – CARLTON (2pt win, 15/8 bet365, William Hill)
CARLTON, a 13-race maiden on turf, won just once from his nine starts on the all-weather for Tracy Waggott but all those took place on Newcastle’s Tapeta surface, and his form has taken off since switched to Polytrack for current handler James Owen. His three runs on this surface have produced three course wins, including a comfortable success 48 hours ago over this 1m6f trip despite the track not favouring his come-from-behind style that night. He faces other course experts tonight but looks miles ahead of his current handicap mark, even with the 5lb penalty, and can complete a four-timer. Tradesman is often slowly away but his course record below Class 4 level reads 51111 (4-5) and he could be the one for the forecast.

2.40 Chelmsford – URBAN SPRAWL (14/1 bet365, 12/1 generally) & QUIET RESOLVE (7/1 William Hill)
URBAN SPRAWL (stall 4) went into my tracker after his fourth of seven in an 8.6f handicap at Wolverhampton on January 4th. They went hard up front in that race and the first three home (described by the Racing Post as “held up in rear”, “midfield” and “in rear”) were in the last three places with just three furlongs to run. Charlie Johnston’s five-year-old, who was described as “raced wide early, prominent, pushed along to lead over 1f out”, did too much too soon and deserves extra credit for finishing only three lengths behind the winner. He’s yet to win on Polytrack but form figures on the surface of 33223 (0-5) suggest each-way claims at a double-figure price.
I also want to support the strong travelling QUIET RESOLVE whose record on the all-weather in fields of 11 or more runners reads 33311 (2-5). Both wins came at Newcastle, but the son of Showcasing is bred to appreciate the switch to Polytrack for the first time and I’m not worried about his stall 12 of 16 draw as he can be tucked in off what should be a strong gallop.
7.00 Wolverhampton – CINQUE VERDE (1.5pt win, 9/1 William Hill)
Nogo’s Dream (11-2 with William Hill) finds it very difficult to get his head in front and he’s always worth opposing in these races. The one to side with his Tony Carroll’s CINQUE VERDE, despite the 161-day layoff. The daughter of Sioux Nation defied a 129-day absence when landing a 5f handicap at Chelmsford last February, the first leg of a hat-trick which also included a 6f Tapeta victory (at Southwell). Wolverhampton’s tight track hasn’t always been a happy hunting ground for the five-year-old – form figures of 1245 (1-4) – but the first two defeats came by narrow margins (half a length and three-quarters of a length) and she raced wide and met trouble when a three-length fifth of eight in the other. Progeny of her sire do well in small fields such as this (all six of her career wins have come in fields of seven or fewer runners) and her stable is in fine form, sending out 11 winners from 44 runners in the past fortnight.

Andrew Mount’s Myth Busters – Do Horses Switching from Fences to Hurdles Make Bad Bets?
Andrew Mount looks into a horse’s campaigning in his latest Myth Busters article, pondering whether horses switching from fences to hurdles make bad bets… When I first started to take my betting seriously in the early 1990s, I remember reading an article by Nick Mordin regarding horses who were reverting to hurdles after running in…
