1.50 York – TOLSTOY (1pt win – 8/1 generally) & GREEN PURSUIT (0.5pt e/w – 40/1 Ladbrokes, Paddy Power)
TOLSTOY was just touched off when we bet her here yesterday, a run that took his record over7f at York to 1112 (3-4), with the defeat by a neck. Today’s bigger field and stronger pace will suit and he’s worth siding with once more.
Dangers include GREEN PURSUIT who has done well since joining Adrian Keatley, landing a punt at Catterick (6f, good) before a head second at Ripon (6f, good). He was beaten into eighth of 14 today’s course and distance next time when fitted with first-time cheekpieces but only went down by a little over three lengths and his prominent style was at a disadvantage (the first four home came from midfield or further back). Fifth-placed Frankie’s Dream, best of those to chase the strong early pace, returned to York ti win a 22-runner handicap next time, while ninth-placed Gallant, another who raced in touch with the early pace, won at Lingfield on his next start. The cheekpieces are swapped for first-time blinkers today and he’s worth a saver.
3.35 York – LOOM (1pt e/w – 18/1 in a place, 16/1 generally)
Having tipped LOOM for the Palace Of Holyrood House Handicap at Royal Ascot next week I feel obliged to have something on Richard Fahey’s three-year-old in this competitive 6f handicap, despite a slight concern about his stall 4 of 22 draw (the GoingStick suggests it’s marginally quicker down the centre). He shaped well on his reappearance when a 33-1 fifth of ten to Double Rush at Newmarket and took a big step forward in a 5f three-year-old handicap here at York next time, doing best of the closers after taking a keen hold in rear. He also ran well over the same course and distance on his latest start, finishing sixth in an all-aged handicap, again taking a keen grip, and doing best of the three-year-olds in a race that is usually dominated by the older brigade. That form has been franked by third-placed Jm Jungle, winner of the “Dash” at Epsom last week, while fifth-placed Miss Attitude found only course expert Regal Envoy three-quarters of a length too good when runner-up at Windsor on Monday. He wears a first-time hood today, a positive angle for his trainer (14 from 82, 17.1% strike-rate, +38.45 to a £1 level stake at SP) and for his sire, Kodiac. Fahey has only fitted a first-time hood to a Kodiac on five occasions, and they recorded form figures of 60111 (3-5) for a profit of £8.63.
3.50 Sandown – WAVE RIDER (1pt win – 8/1 bet365)
WAVE RIDER, my pick for the London Gold Cup Handicap at Newbury last time, finished sixth of the nine runners but was only beaten by three lengths on his first attempt at the 1m2f trip and the hood, worn for the first time that day, is dispensed with. Since 2010, backing horses who competed in the London Gold Cup last time would have found 29 winners from 159 bets (18.2% strike-rate) for a profit of £36.25 to a £1 level stake at SP, with Newbury seventh Circus Of Rome landing a punt (5-1 from 9-1) at Newbury on Thursday. Those London Gold Cup runners who competed in Class 1 or Class 2 company next time were 18 from 85 (21.2%) for a profit of £47.13 (expected winners = 10.07, A/E = 1.79). Harry Charlton’s three-year-old runs in a Class 2 maiden today and can get off the mark.
6.20 Leicester – SIRIUS A (1.5pt win – 13/8 bet365)
It paid to race up with the pace in Humidity’s maiden at Newbury on May 16th, with the winner, runner-up and third described as “made all”, “pressed winner throughout” and “pressed leaders”. Six horses ridden patiently in that race have run since and they achieved the following positions…
Commander’s Intent (11th) – WON 85-40
Bourbon Blues (10th) – WON 6-4
Morris Dancer (7th) – WON 7-4
Do Or Do Not (14th) – 2nd 8-1 (narrowly beaten by odds-on favourite)
Lohoobb (16th) – 2nd 15-2 (beaten by 5-4f in same ownership)
Dodge City (12th) – 3rd 10-1
…today we get the chance to back SIRIUS A, best of the closers when an 18-1 fourth of 18 at Newbury (albeit from a favourable low draw). Today’s extra furlong will suit, and he’s well drawn down the centre of the track.
