3.40 Ascot – FLORA OF BERMUDA (1pt e/w – 10/1 bet365, Ladbrokes, Coral, all four places)

I respect the chances of INISHERIN in the Queen Elizabeth II Jubilee Stakes – his only defeat from five starts in the March to June period was his non-staying 40-1 sixth in last season’s 2000 Guineas at Newmarket – but I’d rather back FLORA OF BERMUDA each-way. Andrew Balding’s filly, bought by Wathnan Racing after her neck second to Inisherin at York last time, has a very consistent profile and has run blinders in her two previous Ascot outings, going down by just half a length when a 25-1 third of 20 in the Champions Sprint Stakes on her final start last term and ‘winning’ the race on the far side when sixth of 26 in the 2023 Queen Mary. The faster they go, the better she runs, and while the ground might be quicker than preferred, I still expect her to run a big race.

15:40 Queen Elizabeth II Jubilee Stakes (Group 1)

4.20 Ascot – NOBLE CHAMPION (0.5pt e/w – 33/1 generally)

The first six finishers in the Greenham Stakes came from the six highest draws (9, 10, 6, 7, 8 and 5), with Ed Walker’s NOBLE CHAMPION, seventh from stall 3, doing well to finish within six lengths of the winner (Jonquil) from his disadvantageous draw. The Lope De Vega colt found the 1m trip stretching his stamina when third to the unbeaten Amiloc at Goodwood next time and 6f was clearly too short when never able to strike a blow behind Symbol Of Honour at Newbury next time. His yard had an 80-1 second (Do Or Do Not) in these colours at Ascot earlier this week and Noble Champion is taken to also out-run his big odds.

16:20 Jersey Stakes (Group 3)

5.00 Ascot –TEN POUNDS (0.5pt e/w – 25/1 bet365, William Hill), COMPLETELY RANDOM (1pt e/w – 16/1 generally with the firms paying six places) & WOODHAY WONDER (1pt e/w – 18/1 William Hill, six places, 16/1 generally)

TEN POUNDS was very well backed for the Victoria Cup over 7f here last month but played up in the stalls and had what turned out to be a poor high draw in stall 14 of 17 (non-runner adjusted). Myal, eighth from the worst of the draw in trap 17, has franked the form since and I’m happy to draw a line through Ten Pounds’ 16th of 17th in that heritage handicap. The four-year-old drops back to 6f in a first-time tongue-tie and, since Harry Charlton has had the licence in his own name, his record with this headgear reads 4311422 (2-7) for a profit of £21.63. His sire, Ten Sovereigns, also shows a profit with his first-time tongue-tied runners and, while stall 4 looked a hopeless case on Thursday’s evidence, some creative watering on Thursday night made it look less of a disadvantage in Friday’s opener.

COMPLETELY RANDOM (stall 14) returned from a gelding operation to score over 5f at Southwell in early April and followed up over 6f at Leicester. He was only fifth to Aramram at Newbury next time but his high draw and patient running style were at a disadvantage that day (first three drawn 2, 3 and 1) and he was very weak in the betting. Today’s big field/strong pace will suit.

WOODHAY WONDER (stall 20) loves rattling fast ground and has only encountered a Proform going adjustment of 1.50 or bigger (i.e. very quick) on five occasions, recording form figures of 11114 (4-5), with the defeat by a length and a half when 10-1 in the 28-runner 5f Palace Of Holyrood House at this meeting last year, a trip she’s yet to win over. Tom Ward’s four-year-old was only eighth of 13 behind More Thunder.

17:00 Wokingham Stakes (Heritage Handicap)

5.35 Ascot – SERAPH GABRIEL (1pt win – 7/2 Coral, Ladbrokes, Bet365)

We’ve only had five previous running of the ‘Gareth Gates’ but all five winners were colts drawn in stall 4 of higher and last year’s six qualifiers included the 1-2-3-4. This angle also hit the first three finishers in 2023, 2022, 2021 and the 1-2-4-5-6 in the inaugural running in 2020. Best of the colts this year could be Ralph Beckett’s SERAPH GABRIEL (stall 16) whose three-quarters of a length second to Fifth Column at Sandown on his reappearance was franked when John & Thady Gosden-trained winner did best of the far side bunch when seventh of 30 in Thursday’s Britannia Stakes. The step up to 1m2f  looks likely to suit.

17:35 Golden Gates Stakes (Handicap)
