1.45 Newbury – RIGHTSOTOM (1.5pt win – 13/2 bet365, 6-1 generally) & WELSH CHARGER (1pt win – 11/1 bet365, William Hill)
Backing all the five-year-olds in this 2m4.5f handicap hurdle would have found seven of the last ten winners (from 27 bets) for a profit of £14.95 to a £1 level stake at SP, with those who finished first or second in their prep race winning six from 13 (+£26.58). RIGHTSOTOM is this year’s sole qualifier and Joe Tizzard’s top weight looks well worth a bet. He’s tasted defeat on both of his seasonal debuts but his record once he’s had a run becomes 6411 (2-4), with the first reverse a 200-1 sixth of 15 to Lossiemouth in the Triumph Hurdle and the other a 25-1 fourth to Zenta in another Grade 1 contest – the Anniversary Hurdle at Aintree.
Alastair Ralph’s WELSH CHARGER took his hurdles record below Class 2 level to 21214111 (5-8) when scoring comfortably at Wetherby last time and has gone under the radar largely thanks to his unfashionable connections. He too is worth a bet.

2.45 Catterick – EMOTIONAL ROLLER (1pt win – 9/1 bet365)
EMOTIONAL ROLLER doesn’t look an obvious bet after pulling up at Uttoxeter last week where he jumped poorly. However, the Joel Parkinson & Sue Smith-trained six-year-old finished second in his two other runs this term and his yard is in good form after their usual slow start to the season. It’s relatively rare for Sue Smith to run one of hers within eight days of a previous outing but she’s scored with 13 of the 46 qualifiers since the beginning of 2-16 (28.3%) for a profit of £65.94 to a £1 level stake at SP and we can expect better today.
3.35 Newbury – INTEHWATERSIDE (2pt win – 3/1 generally)
I laid INTHEWATERSIDE for a place after seeing him awash with sweat and needing two handlers to hold him in the paddock prior to his reappearance outing in a 2m4f handicap hurdle at Newbury last month but did my dough after he finished an eight-length third (15 lengths clear of the remainder) under a front-running ride. He looks for every part a chaser and will come on a bundle for that comeback run, which was also his first since a wind operation.

Andrew Mount’s Myth Busters – Does Cheltenham Form Translate from the Old Course to the New Course?
We have a two-day Cheltenham meeting to get stuck into at the end of the week (Friday/Saturday) where the action switches from the Old Course – used during October/November – to the New Course. Last month, the Racing Post published a ‘Walking The Course With Aidan Coleman’ article in which the jockey highlighted the differences…
