1.35 Newcastle – CITY HOUSE (1pt win – 15/2 generally)

I wrote the following about CITY HOUSE after his runner-up effort on his all-weather debut at Wolverhampton last September…

‘The betting for the 6f Free Tips Daily atthetaces.com Novice Stakes revolved around Saeed Bin Suroor’s 11-8 favourite NEZEEH and the Crisford’s PEN PORTRAIT (6-4). However, the eyecatcher from the race was James Fanshawe’s all-weather debutant CITY HOUSE who arrived late to finish three-quarters of a length behind Pen Portrait in second place. Poorly drawn in stall 10, the 9-1 shot missed a beat at the start and was held up in rear by Robert Havlin. The son of Night Of Thunder was still in ninth place on turning in and looked to be going nowhere with a furlong and a half to run. However, the penny finally dropped, and he stayed on out wide to finish with a flourish. This was a big step up on July’s Ascot run (last of 11) behind Al Musmak and he looks sure to break his duck in the very near future.’

He duly won by almost five lengths in a 6f handicap at Kempton the following month (9-4f) before twice finishing well held when contesting big-field handicaps at Newmarket this spring (6f/7f). The return to the all-weather brought about a return to form at Kempton earlier this month where he finished second by a neck to Drama, who went close at Newmarket on Thursday, and the three-year-old looks interesting in this 6f Class 2 contest. His stall 13 draw could prove helpful (six of the eight winners of this race were drawn in stall 8 or higher) and he’s worth a punt despite the majority of the early pace being drawn low.

2.15 Newmarket – TALES OF THE HEART (1pt win – 7/2 bet365, Sky Bet)

Those who contested a Class 1, 2 or 3 contest on their latest outing have a 0-30 record in the past ten runnings of the Listed Empress Stakes and this stat rules out one of the market leaders Teej A, as well as It Ain’t Two and Havana Gila. I much prefer the claims of Ralph Beckett’s TALES OF THE HEART, a winner ay Kempton on her debut earlier this month. The form of that win was boosted by the third/fourth – Jewel Of London and Miss El Fundi – who went on to run fourth/fifth in the Chesham Stakes at Royal Ascot when priced at 80-1 and 50-1 respectively. Hopefully, the Kempton runner-up, Remaat, will boost the form in the 1.40 at Newmarket today and I wouldn’t put you off the win double.

Maureen Brittain Memorial Empress Fillies’ Stakes (Listed Race)

3.35 Chester – JUNGLE MAC (1pt win – 4/1 William Hill)

JUNGLE MAC, well drawn in stall 1, looks the pace angle under Franny Norton in this 7f Class 2 handicap and can make all. Jack Channon’s three-year-old caught the eye when third to Mickley at Doncaster on his penultimate start, doing best of those to race on the front end, form that was given a major boost when the winner landed the Britannia Stakes at Royal Ascot. Fourth-placed Love Billy Boy also scored at the next time of asking, while June Mac himself was only beaten by a head when runner-up at Newmarket.

4.10 Chester – BULLDOG SPIRIT (1pt win – 5/1 generally)

BULLDOG SPIRIT could only finish tenth of 14 to Letsbefrank in a 1m3f handicap at Hamilton last time but he made the running ata strong gallop and contributed to a pace collapse. That race is working out incredibly well, with the winner, third and fourth all winning since and several others running well in defeat. The Rebecca Menzies-trained four-year-old should be able to beat pace rival Dreams Adozen to the inside rail and is worth a punt.
