1.50 Doncaster – PRESSURE’S ON (1pt e/w – 8/1 William Hill, 15/2 generally)

Four-year old geldings who were drawn in stall 8 or lower have won seven of the past ten renewals of the Spring Mile and backing all 30 qualifiers would have returned a profit of £90.00 to a £1 level stake at SP (expected winners = 2.20, A/E = 3.18). The five qualifiers in 2022 included the first four finishers and PRESSURE’S ON might prove best of the quartet that fit the bill this year (the others are Our Havana, Spirit Of Acklam and Ocean Of Dreams). Ed Dunlop’s son of Land Force caught the eye when a best-of-the-closers second at Wolverhampton earlier this month and his two turf runs last spring – both in hot 7f handicaps at Newmarket – were particularly noteworthy – he fared best of the closers when runner-up in the first of them and best of those drawn high when a four-length eighth of 19 in the other. He usually runs his race given a straight track and cut in the ground and his patient style will be an asset.

2.05 Kempton – GOLDEN RULES (1pt win – 11/2 William Hill, 5/1 Paddy Power, Betfair)

Previous winning course form or at least a top-four finish has proved to be a good pointer to finding the Queen’s Prize winner. Last year, seven of the 13 runners had won here previously but only two had won at least twice and they first and second (6-1 & 10-1) for a £78.50 Tote Exacta. There are four previous course winners in today’s nine-runner line-up and the interesting one is GOLDEN RULES, despite the 637-day absence. Thomas Faulkner’s eight-year-old defied a 638-day layoff when scoring over track and trip in March 2023 and his only subsequent outing saw him finish second by half a length in the Northumberland Plate.

2.40 Kempton – KILLYBEGS WARRIOR (1pt e/w, 18/1 William Hill, Coral, Ladbrokes)

George Baker won this last year with 25-1 shot Cemhaan (one of only two course winners in the line-up), who beat Charlie Johnston’s KILLYBEGS WARRIOR into second place. The runner-up is now with Baker and looks very interesting back on all-weather for first time since his run in this race last year, especially as he can compete off an 11lb lower mark. The five-year-old ran well on his only other two all-weather outings – both as a juvenile – including a 66-1 one-length third to subsequent Group 2 winner Bold Act at Chelmsford.

5.45 Curragh – LEINSTER (2pt win – 11/2 Paddy Power)

LEINSTER only had two runs last season, comfortably justifying favouritism in a 1m2f Down Royal maiden before his eyecatching third in a handicap at Roscommon over a similar trip. It paid to race on the front end that day, with the winner (Sumptuary Law) and runner-up (Gibbs Island) in the first two throughout. Leinster fared best of those to come from midfield or further back and the patiently-ridden fourth, fifth and sixth have all won at least once since. Jospeh O’Brien’s four-year-old has been gelded over the winter and his trainer is ten from 50 with geldings in March/April who returning from at least 150 days off the track for a profit of £71.50 to a £1 level stake at SP (expected winners = 5.60, A/E = 1.79). Those who were having their first run since being gelded were six from 18 for a profit of £61.00.
