1.15 Newbury – FRENCH SHIP (1pt win – 13/2 bet365, 11/2 generally)

I’ve found the Newbury handicaps to be a real struggle and can’t be confident enough to recommend a bet, especially with the ground drying out. I was tempted by Issar D’Airy in the last race, especially after the Moores had a double here on Friday, but the price has collapsed and I’m heading to this novices’ hurdle for my only bet on the card…

The in-form yard of Philip Hobbs and Johnson White have a good record in non-handicap hurdles at Newbury, scoring with 36 of the 166 qualifiers this century for a very healthy profit of £157.27 to a £1 level stake at SP. Don’t Wind Me Up ran third at 18-1 on this angle yesterday and FRENCH SHIP might be able to improve on that position. The four-year-old had a subsequent easy winner back in second place when keeping on strongly to land a maiden hurdle at Chepstow on his latest start and clocked a fast time in the process. The 19-length third gave the form a minor boost when runner-up at Doncaster yesterday and it’s possible that the market has over-reacted to the hype surrounding Dan Skelton’s The New Lion.

2.10 Newcastle – COLONEL MUSTARD (0.5pt ew – 40/1 bet365, William Hill, Paddy Power, Betfair)

With the dead eight runners and two skinny ones at the head of the market, the Grade 1 Fighting Fifth Hurdle looks ideal for an each-way punt. COLONEL MUSTARD found the 2m3.5f trip stretching his stamina when beaten by just under two lengths into third place in Grade 2 company at Ascot last week and today’s likely stronger pace will suit. Fifth to State Man in last season’s Champion Hurdle, despite the ground being much slower than preferred, he’s finish in the top three in six of his other eight starts in Britain and is better equipped to handle the prevailing good ground than the majority of his rivals.
