2.05 Haydock – WAY OF STARS (1pt win – 9/1 bet365) & POLE STAR (1pt win- 12/1 bet365)
WAY OF STARS has proved consistent since a gelding operation, recording form figures of 3241 (1-4), with his two-length fourth to MANY MEN (re-opposes here) at Doncaster on his penultimate start, especially eyecatching as he emerged clear best of those on the front end when it paid to come from off the pace. He followed that with a seven-length romp in maiden company at Goodwood and could be ahead of the handicapper.
POLE STAR also ran in the Many Men/Way Of Stars race at Doncaster, finishing just under five lengths behind the winner in sixth place and doing second best of the prominent racers. He was rallying when meeting trouble two furlongs out and the Johnston yard has a useful record in this 1m6f handicap.
2.25 Sandown – TRIBAL RHYTHM (0.5pt e/w – 25/1 William Hill, 20/1 generally)
It was incredibly difficult to come from off the pace at Epsom on Oaks Day and all 35 horses ridden patiently were beaten. Sixteen of those horses have run since, with two winning at Royal Ascot – Miss Information at 11-1 in the Kensington Palace Stakes and 7-1 shot Havana Hurricane in the Windsor Castle Stakes. Early pace was the key ingredient in the 1m handicap won by Mirsky at that Epsom meeting, with the winner (“disputed lead early, raced in second after 2f”) and runner-up Alpha Crucis (“in touch with leaders”) never far away. The hold-up horses to have run since achieved the following results…
Position / horse / next race
3rd / Julia Augusta / 10th of 23 to Miss Information in Kensington Palace Stakes where badly drawn (also ran partially shod)
4th / Ebt’s Guard / seventh of 30 (second of centre group) behind My Cloud when 28-1 for Royal Hunt Cup
6th / Bopedro / 50-1 third of 30 in Royal Hunt Cup
Today, it is the turn of Epsom seventh TRIBAL RHYTHM (“in rear, some headway final 110yds, never dangerous”) who was only a place and a length behind Bopedro. Denis Coakley’s four-year-old needs to prove his effectiveness right-handed but looks worth a small each-way interest.
7.23 Nottingham – SPIRIT OF APPLAUSE (2pt win – 2/1 bet365)
SPIRIT OF APPLAUSE was beaten by a head into second place over this course and distance on his latest trip to the East Midlands and Tim Easterby’s gelding was a big eyecatcher in a Class 3 handicap at Redcar last time. The five-year-old fared best of those to come from off the pace and best of those draw high when two lengths behind Azure Angel and the hold-up horse in sixth place – Nigel Tinkler’s Muker – was a 12-1 winner at Doncaster yesterday. Spirit Of Applause is 3lb lower than for is latest course visit and drops back down to Class 4 level this evening.
