1.30 Kempton – STAR PUPIL (1pt win – 18/1 Betfair, Paddy Power, BetVictor)

STAR PUPIL ran a promising race over 1m here on his debut in December, finishing just over four lengths back in a 6-1 sixth of 13 behind 50-1 stablemate Arcturian, a comfortable winner again since. The cut back to 6f won’t be an issue on breeding – progeny of Zoustar are 26 from 164 at this trip (16%) for a profit of £165.69 to a £1 level stake at SP – and his trainer has started the season in fantastic fashion, scoring with eight of his 19 runners (42%) in the past fortnight.

Virgin Bet Restricted Novice Stakes (For horses In Bands B, C And D) (GBB Race)

2.05 Kempton – CHOISYA (1pt ew – 9/2 Coral, 4/1 bet365)

This race has been dominated by the fancied horses, with the last ten winners from the front three in the betting. Simon & Ed Crisford’s CHOISYA certainly fits the bill and it’s hard to fault her record over this 1m trip without headgear – form figures of 5221121 (3-7), with the sole unplaced effort by a length a half when running green at Lingfield on her racecourse debut. The four-year-old landed a Class 2 handicap over course and distance when we last saw her and doesn’t look out of place in Listed company.

4.55 Kempton – AZURE ANGEL (1pt win – 3/1 generally)

I wrote the following about AZURE ANGEL in the Racing Post Weekender after her introduction at Yarmouth back in September 2022…

‘Last Thursday’s British EBF Fillies’ Novice Stakes looked a strong contest on paper and so it proved, with John & Thady Gosden’s Ananda justifying 5-4 favouritism by two lengths from the William Haggas-trained 7-2 shot Pinafore. Roger Varian’s juvenile newcomer Azure Angel was a further four lengths back in third place, but she might prove to be at least as good as the two that beat her. The daughter of Harry Angel, backed from 17-2 into 6-1, broke well enough but was anchored in rear by Jack Mitchell and found herself several lengths back in last place with two furlongs to run. Switched more towards the nearside for a clear run, it took a while for the penny to drop but when it did, she picked up in taking fashion. The winner and runner-up were up with the pace throughout, and the time was only a fraction slower than the 6f Class 3 handicap won by four-year-old First Folio later on the card. She’ll be hard to beat next time out on this evidence and could easily be a Pattern-class filly.’

She duly got off the mark at Newcastle (7f) the following month and made it two from two on the all-weather with a 6f Kempton win in November of the same year. She only raced twice in 2023, tasting defeat at Windsor on her reappearance in May before yet another all-weather win at Chelmsford in July. She overcame market weakness on her comeback at Newcastle in February to win comfortably at odds of 9-1 and she can make it five from five on synthetics this afternoon, despite a wide draw in stall 10.
