1.50 Sandown – DESPERATE HERO (2pt win – 5/1 William Hill, 9/2 bet365)

DESPERATE HERO ran an astonishing race at Hamilton last time, landing a 5f Class 2 handicap by four and a half lengths at odds of 9-1. Pre-race, I thought Jack Channon’s four-year-old was up against it from stall 13 but he used his early speed to get away from the rail and stormed clear. That race has worked out extremely well with the other 14 runners from that contest winning five times on their next outing (8-1, 6-1, 9-2, 4-1 and 9-4), with three of the nine beaten horses finishing second (15-2, 15-2 and 5-1) and three more finishing fourth (40-1, 9-1 and 7-2). The forecast rain will help, and he looks a solid bet.

Coral Charge (Group 3) (Registered as the Sprint Stakes)

4.47 Sandown – SWEET REWARD (1pt each-way – 16/1 Betfair, Paddy Power)

SWEET REWARD has a useful record at this time of year, recording form figures in handicaps in July/August of 3126529250171 (3-13) for a profit of £16.25 to a £1 level stake at SP. Jonny Portman’s finished a creditable fifth on unsuitably fast ground over course and distance on June 14th – going down by three lengths at 18-1 – a race in which he also finished fifth last year before scoring at Epsom on his first July outing of the season. His first July outing in 2022 resulted in a narrow 20-1 second of 15 in this race and he won’t mind if the ground eases further.

Coral Daily Rewards Shaker Handicap

7.10 Nottingham – BIBENDUM (1pt win – 9/1 with Paddy Power/Betfair), RAY VONN (1pt win – 9/2 with Paddy Power/Betfair)

BIBENDUM ended his juvenile campaign on a low but the Gosden’s Showcasing colt has undergone wind surgery over the winter and could be worth chancing on his belated reappearance. His stable has a nine from 14 record with three-year-olds on their first run back after a wind operation (+£16.76 to a £1 level stake at SP), including two from two in handicaps (7-2 and 100-30).

RAY VONN is zero from eight on the all-weather but has won two of his eight turf starts, including a two from two haul at Nottingham (wins at 8-1 and 100-30). His full record in 6f handicaps on turf stands at 34141 (2-5) and he won’t mind if the forecast rain arrives.
