12.40 Sandown – LARCHMONT LASS (2pt win – 11/4 bet365)
Backing five or six-year-olds who finished in the top four in their prep race would have found ten of the last 12 winners of this 2m4f mares’ handicap hurdle (from 48 bets) and made a profit of £23.00 to a £1 level stake at SP. Five of the 13 runners fit the bill, including LARCHMONT LASS, who returned from wind surgery to score in a fast time at Wincanton last month, impressive as the Paul Nicholls handicappers were needing their reappearance runs at the time. She drops from Class 2 to Class 3 level, and he record right-handed reads 3212411 (3-7), including a heavy-ground course success.

1.32 Aintree – CERENDIPITY (1pt win – 10/1 bet365, 9/1 Paddy Power)
Last year’s winner Richmond Lake (100-30 best at the time of writing) and No Risk Des Flos (11-2), who caught the eye behind L’Eau Du Sud at Stratford on his reappearance, both have solid claims but I’m still keen to back CERENDIPITY to small stakes given his good record on his second start of the season. Joel Parkinson and Sue Smith’s seven-year-old was beaten by 13 lengths when sixth of eight at Bangor on last month’s reappearance and bounced back from similar defeats to score second time out last term and in the 2022/23 season.
2.07 Aintree – KING TURGEON (1pt win – 4/1 generally) & PERCUSSION (0.5pt ew – 20/1 generally)
I was keen on Chianti Classico when I discussed the Becher Handicap Chase on Thursday’s Weekend Watch podcast/youtube channel but having looked further into the weight stats for recent winner of this 3m2f contest I’ve gone off the top weight in favour of KING TURGEON. David Pipe’s six-year-old scored with any amount in handicap when an 8-1 winner for this column at Chepstow in late October and the cut back to 2m5f and switch to the Grand National fences was no issue in the Grand Sefton where he scored by just over three lengths under a prominent ride. The next four finishers were all ridden patiently and he had 15 lengths to spare over the next prominent racer to cross the line, sixth-placed Frero Banbou who landed the Rehearsal Chase at Newcastle next time.
I’ve saved on PERCUSSION, who has a good record over these fences with form figures of 33237 (0-5), including placed efforts in the last two renewals of this race. I was initially disappointed with last month’s 12-1 seventh behind King Turgeon in the Grand Sefton but he probably did too much too soon and was only one place behind subsequent scorer Frero Banbou. The Laura Morgan stable is in better form now and the first-time visor, which replaces his usual cheekpieces, could perk him up. Progeny of his sire Malinas are four from ten in this headgear for a profit of £21.00 to a £1 level stake at SP.
2.25 Sandown – ROYAL WAY (1pt win – 10/1 generally)
Gary Moore won this 2m handicap hurdle 12 months ago with a four-year-old who was ridden by a jockey claiming an allowance and I like the chances of ROYAL WAY to follow suit. Freddie Mitchell’s mount showed promise when fourth in a good-ground conditions hurdle at Cheltenham on his return and can be forgiven a subsequent modest effort in the Greatwood Handicap Hurdle at the same venue, also on good ground. This represents a drop in class and I like the switch to a right-handed track, as his record this way round since his British debut reads 2111 (3-4), with the defeat at 28-1 behind Sir Gino. The softer going also looks ideal.

Andrew Mount’s Myth Busters – Christmas Gambles – Fact Or Fiction?
With Christmas approaching we can expect any well backed winner, especially from a small yard, to be followed by comments from punters and pundits along the lines of “they got the Christmas money for the stable there”. The assumption being that owners and stable staff have had a good bet on the winner to “pay…
