It’s Derby Day at Epsom and Andrew Mount heads to the iconic track for his best bets of the day, as he looks to land some profit on a terrific day’s racing.

1.00 – Epsom – ROYAL DRESS (1pt win – 9/2 generally)
ROYAL DRESS was unlucky in running when a close-up 14-1 third in this race last season on good to soft going and the ground should be in her favour if the weather forecast is correct. She ran a pleasing race on her return to action at York, finishing a 14-1 third to the hugely impressive 8-11 favourite See The Fire in the Group 2 Middleton Fillies’ Stakes. Her record below Group 1 level when rested for at least a month reads 1171133 (4-7) for a profit of £49.50 to a £1 level stake at SP.
1.35 Epsom – PERSICA (1pt win – 9/4 bet365, William Hill)
With the forecast rain against current favourite DOCKLANDS the bet in the Diomed Stakes has to be PERSICA. Richard Hannon’s four-year-old has a fantastic record below Group 1 level when returned to the track within four weeks of his latest outing – form figures of 111011 (5-6) for a profit of £22.00 to a £1 level stake at SP and he comfortably landed the the 1m2f handicap on this card last year on his only previous course visit. He s outclassed in the Group 1 Lockinge Stakes at Newbury three weeks ago and will appreciate the drop to Group 3 level. Ryan Moore takes the ride and his chance improves with every drop of rain.
2.10 Epsom – GLORIOUS KITTY (1pt e/w, 14/1 generally with the firms paying five places)
It’s possible that pace angle RUBY’S PROFIT will simply ping the lids and make all down the stands’ side from stall 18 of 19 but we’ve seen plenty of low-drawn runners out-perform their odds in this race and the later “Dash” and I’m going to chance GLORIOUS KITTY from stall 1. Mick Easterby has hit the frame with around 50% of his course runners this century and the daughter of Cotai Glory will appreciate any rain that falls. She was a huge eyecatcher on her debut at York last May where she was pitched straight into Listed company, keeping on well into a close-up 40-1 fourth of 15 behind runners now rated 100, 97 and 89. She runs off just 75 today.
5.40 Epsom – ROUSING ENCORE (1pt win – 5/1 William Hill, 888sport)
Ruth Carr won this 6f handicap with Badri in 2023 and can strike again with ROUSING ENCORE. It’s possibly coincidence but this has been a good race for raiders from the midlands/north, with those travelling 100 miles or more to Epsom taking the past ten renewals (from 86 runners) for a profit of £10.50 to a £1 level stake at SP (those trained more locally were 0-56 in the same period). A recent run has also been helpful and those rested for 29 days or longer were 0-30. ROUSING ENCORE caught the eye when sixth at Leicester on his penultimate start, doing too much too soon in a race set up for the closers, and caused a 22-1 upset in a big field at York next time (24 days ago). His trainer has a good record with last-time out winners, including seven from 24 this year for a profit of £15.13 and his York win was backed up by the clock.
8.00 Chepstow – HAPPY CHANDLER (1pt win – 13/2 bet365)
HAPPY CHANDLER is an eight-race maiden but caught the eye when a 14-1 fifth of 11 here on May 13th, doing well to finish so close after switching to challenge down the middle of the track, well away from the strongly favoured stands’ rail. Michael Blake’s four-year-old took a similar route to third-placed Johnjay who won at Brighton next time while the winner followed up to further boost the form. The son of Al Kazeem swaps first-time cheekpieces for first-time blinkers and is worth chancing to break his duck.
