2.40 Warwick – ROYALE MARGAUX (0.5pt e/w – 25/1 bet365, Paddy Power)
I want to throw a dart at ROYALE MARGAUX in this 2m5f Listed mares’ hurdle, as those at the front of the market could prove vulnerable. Gala Marceau often fails to settle and has been beaten at short odds on both seasonal debuts for Willie Mullins. West Balboa has been disappointing this term and wears first-time headgear while Your Wear It Well is reverting from fences and might need a run to get used to hurdles again. Dameofthecotswolds is a possibility now taking on her own sex again, but Royal Margaux is an even bigger price. Tom Symonds’ seven-year-old caught the eye when a close-up third in a 3m Class 2 mares’ handicap hurdle at Kempton last time, doing best of those to come from off the pace. She was over eight lengths ahead of West Balboa and the patiently-ridden fifth, Looking As You Are, gave the form a boost when scoring at Ludlow earlier this week. She looked the likely winner in the straight (traded at 2.0 in running) but didn’t quite see out the trip. Today’s distance looks ideal.

3.35 Newbury – FAVOUR AND FORTUNE (1pt e/w – 9/1 generally, some firms paying six places)
I’ve put my Alan King bias to one side and decided to back FAVOUR AND FORTUNE each-way in Saturday’s big betting race – the William Hill Hurdle (formerly the Betfair Hurdle). The seven-year-old was my each-way pick for the Supreme Novices’ Hurdle last season where he performed miracles to go down by less than ten lengths in a 28-1 sixth after jumping abysmally. He fared best of an admittedly weak British contingent that day and hurdled more fluently when accounting for his 14 rivals in the Scottish Champion Hurdle on his next start. The seven-year-old could only finish a modest sixth at Ascot on his reappearance but that run will bring him on and I’m guessing that this has always been the target. His Ayr victory took his record on flat/easy tracks to 111121 (5-6), with the defeat at 10-1 in a Grade 1 Hurdle at Aintree behind Jango Baie (now rated 153). Favour And Fortune runs off 140 today, only 2lb higher than at Ayr, and the likely strong gallop will suit..
4.10 Newbury – TOSS OF A COIN (1pt win – 17/2 William Hill)
Paul Nicholls has a good record when using first-time cheekpieces on his chasers, scoring with 30 of the 125 qualifiers since the beginning of 2010 for a profit of £43.39 to a £1 level stake at SP and TOSS OF A COIN, pulled up at Exeter just before Christmas, is taken to bounce back in the headgear, especially now returned to a left-handed track (his two runs in this direction produced a course win and a half-length runner-up effort at Uttoxeter). He reminds me of last year’s winner – stablemate Makin’yourmindup – who was also switching from a right-handed track to a left-handed one after jumping out to his left at Leicester. That one was giving Nicholls his third win in the race in the past four years and Toss Of A Coin is worth a punt to make it four from five.
