4.45 Musselburgh – ONLY SPOOFING (1pt win – 11/2 bet365, William Hill, Ladbrokes)
ONLY SPOOFING returned to form with a third place at Bellewstown eight days ago and it looks significant that Kevin Coleman sends him across to Musselburgh again where his record reads 3111 (3-4), with the third place at 12-1 in a field of 13 when the pair that beat him were better drawn. The veteran is perfectly drawn in stall 14 today and while winless since August 2023, the return to this venue off a mark of just 66 (his course wins came off 84, 78 and 77) makes him worth a punt.
6.15 Musselburgh – BENACRE (0.5pt e/w – 17/2 BetVictor, Ladbrokes, Coral, 8/1 generally)
Charlie Johnston’s BENACRE has the worst of the draw in stall 12 of 12 in this 7f handicap but he’s the only regular front-runner in the line-up and we saw the importance of early pace at Musselburgh’s opening meeting on April 2nd when the pacesetters earned form figures of 1321322 (2-7), with the wins at 22-1 and 3-1. The 22-1 winner was Doomsday (stall 10 of 10) who overcame the worst of the draw in another 7f handicap. Benacre returned from his winter break to finish a creditable fifth of 12 at Chelmsford last month and will be happier back on turf (that Chelmsford run took his all-weather score to 0-6). He’s yet to race here but his three wins have come on other sharp tracks (Epsom, twice, and Goodwood) and it should suit.
