4.15 Hamilton – CABELLEROSO (1pt win – 12/1 bet365, 11/1 generally)
High draws usually struggle in 6f races at Hamilton, as the best ground is usually found down the centre of the track, not on the stands’ rail. LORD ROXBY, the 7-2 favourite at the time of writing, isn’t best drawn in stall 11 of 14, while GLORIOUS KITTY (a solid sixth in the three-year-old “Dash” at Epsom when we were on each-way), has fared worst of the draw in stall 14. FAR ABOVE THE LAW (stall 13) is also prominent in the betting despite a high draw. Since the beginning of the 2021 season, backing runners drawn in stalls 1 and 2 in 6f Hamilton races featuring nine or more runners would have found 20 winners from 94 bets (21.3% strike-rate) for a huge profit of £267.50 to a £1 level stake at SP (expected winners = 9.64, A/E = 2.07). At Betfair the profit was a massive £1071.38 after 2% commission. That was largely thanks to 200-1 winner Astrapor (BSP 1000) but take that one out and it’s still a healthy return on investment. CABELLEROSO (stall 2) beat only a couple home in Hammer The Hammer’s race at Chester last time but his connections felt that the ground (officially ‘good’ that day) was too quick. More interesting is the return of the hood today – missing for that Chester run but on when he scored at Chelmsford last December – and the subsequent gelding operation – Hugo Palmer is 28 from 169 (16.6% strike-rate) with newly gelded runners for a profit of £38.32 (expected winners = 21.28, A/E = 1.32). With conditions described as good, good to soft in places, with showers forecast the ground should be slow enough for him. I will save on Tim Easterby’s U SURE DO on his handicap debut. He finished a respectable third behind runners now rated 95 and 90 at Pontefract on his return to action in April and am opening mark of 80 could underestimate him.
6.15 Hamilton – MONSIEUR KODI (1pt win – 10/1 William Hill, 888sport, 9/1 generally)
MONSIEUR KODI has won just once from 18 starts in Class 3 or higher company and that win – in the Class 2 consolation race for the Stewards’ Cup in 2023, was a Class 2 in name only, as the highest rated horses was 88. He’s best judged on form figures in turf handicaps below Class 3 level of 61521111344 (5-11) for a profit of £24.50 to a £1 level stake at SP. Richard Fahey’s six-year-old enjoys cut in the ground and will come on for his recent comeback when a respectable 50-1 seventh of 14 under a 7lb claimer at Chelmsford. Oisin Orr is back on board today and he looks well berthed in stall 2 of 15 (see 4.15 preview above for 6f Hamilton draw stats).
