1.22 Lingfield – MICK’S SPRIIT (1pt win – 100/30 bet365, 3/1 William Hill)
MICK’S SPIRIT (stall 1 of 8) broke smartly over course and distance on February 7th and made all to score by a short head at odds of 25-1. Conrad Allen’s seven-year-old had failed to beat a rival over course and distance last month but the drop to Class 5 level clearly helped, and he often runs well at this time of year. His record in January/February now reads 4324241285111 (4-13), improving to 43215111 (4-8) at Lingfield only. He doubled up in February of last year and doesn’t look to face a huge amount of competition for the early lead.

4.00 Musselburgh – STAR VANTAGE (1pt win – 2/1 William Hill, 15/8 generally)
STAR VANTAGE found only stablemate Edgewell too good at Southwell on February, going down by two and a half lengths and pulling 17 lengths clear of J P McManus-owned 9-4 favourite Jongleur d’Etoiles. He didn’t race as wide as the winner (which was an obvious advantage on ground that was badly poached on the inside) and, with the winner following up at Fakenham despite seemingly hating the track, he looks worth a bet. The Rebecca Menzies-trained eight-year-old is an 18-race maiden but he’s only had five runs for his current yard, starting at double-digit odds in four of them and he can get off the mark in what looks a weak race. He was denied a good opportunity when Doncaster’s meeting was called off on February 6th and he ran well over course and distance three runs back, going down by just under six lengths in a 12-1 fourth of ten behind Punxsutawney Phil, who won by 16 lengths at Newcastle earlier this week.
