2.05 Fontwell – UNANSWERED PRAYERS (1pt win – 9/1 generally)
The Chris Gordon yard was struggling for winners when UNANSWERED PRAYERS made his reappearance in the 3m1f handicap chase at Cheltenham’s October meeting and the 20-1 shot could never get involved from his midfield sit, coming home 38 lengths behind the winner. Second time out could be when to catch him – he won at Cheltenham’s November meeting in the 2022/23 season after going down by 50 lengths at Fontwell on his reappearance and he may have won on his second outing last term but for a late fall at Ascot when in second place. His stable is in better form now and improvement looks likely.

2.30 Navan – CHEMICAL ENERGY (1pt ew – 12/1 bet365, five places, 10-1 general) & AMERICAN MIKE (1pt ew – 9/2 Sky Bet six places, 9-2 five places generally)
Those near the head of the handicap have fared well in recent renewals of the Grade 3 Troytown Handicap Chase and simply backing those numbered one, two or three on the racecard would have hit the winner six times in the past eight years and has also thrown up a couple of winning Tote Exactas (including an 11-1 beat 8-1 for a £125.70 dividend in 2022). A top-three finish last time out has also been a good pointer to the winner and Gordon Elliott has been responsible for six of the last ten winners. CHEMICAL ENERGY qualifies on all three of these angles and he’ll appreciate today’s decent ground (officially good to yielding). He tends to run best at this time of year, recording form figures in September, October or November of 11121116P3 (6-10), improving to 11121113 (6-8) on officially good to soft or faster going. The first-time blinkers could eke out some improvement.
AMERICAN MIKE, a stablemate of Chemical Energy, has form figures at this track of 12411 (3-5) and has a great record when fresh, recording seasonal debut figures of 111 (3-3). The seven-year-old would prefer slower going but it looks significant that he reappears at his favourite venue and he’s also worth a bet.
