6.15 Pontefract – VANTHEMAN (2pt win – 9/4 bet365, William Hill)
VANTHEMAN was a huge eyecatcher at York’s Dante meeting, faring best of those drawn high when runner-up in a 17-runner 5f handicap. (first four drawn 1, 13, 2 and 3). Kevin Ryan’s three-year-old was popular in the betting for the Palace Of Holyrood House Handicap at Royal Ascot next time but disappointed, coming home tenth of 28 at odds of 9-1. He bounced back to land an eight-runner course and distance handicap last month and it now looks clear that he simply needs a small field – that win taking his record in single-digit line-ups to 3111 (3-4), with the sole defeat on his racecourse debut when a 25-1 shot in a 6f Haydock novice won by Lake Forest (now rated 111). He’s handily drawn in stall 4 and should be able to dominate against the inside rail. I’d expected odds of around 6-4 or 13-8 and the generally available 2-1+ looks on the generous side.
