3.00 Goodwood – TIRIAC (1pt win – 15/2 William Hill, 7/1 bet365)
I selected the Kevin Ryan-trained Sergeant Wilko in this column when he scored at Newmarket last month, a win that took his record over a stiff 6f to 111 (3-3). He heads the market at around 9-4 today but, while the recent rain is in his favour, I’m not convinced that Goodwood will suit. Throw in the yard’s poor record over 6f+ here at this time of year (July/August) – just one winner from 125 runners – and there could be some value in taking him on. The bet for me has to be TIRIAC, who fared best of those to come from off the pace when fifth on unsuitably fast ground in the Scottish Stewards’ Cup at Hamilton last time. A winner at Windsor (heavy) and York (good to soft) earlier this season, his sole course outing saw him finish second by a neck on soft ground, pulling three lengths clear of the third and the Channon yard is in good form.
3.35 Goodwood – REBEL TERRITORY (1pt win – 7/1 generally)
It was hard not to be impressed by REBEL TERRITORY’s Victoria Cup win at Ascot last season where he romped home by four lengths on soft ground at odds of 11-1. Amanda Perrett’s six-year-old has off the track since that victory but with the ground in his favour and his yard in fine form he looks worth chancing in this 7f handicap. His record on turf reads 23161164511 (5-11), improving to 11 (2-2) over 7f only.
4.10 Goodwood – ROGER HENRY (2pt win – 4/1 bet365)
ROGER HENRY, a soft-ground winner at Beverley when he last ran on turf, has caught the eye against pace biases on the all-weather the last twice. Gay Kelleway’s four-year-old did remarkably well to run second by a neck under a prominent ride in a 1m2f apprentice handicap at Newcastle when the winner, third and fourth all came form off the pace and he also did too much too soon in an amateur riders’ handicap at Chelmsford last time, running third in a race dominated by the late closers. His trainer has a good record in sellers and the ground has come right.

Andrew Mount’s Myth Busters – Do ‘Gambling Yards’ Still Exist or Are They in the Past?
The world of horse racing no longer allows for the old-fashioned skulduggery that used to pervade the sport. However, in this week’s Myth Busters column, Andrew Mount asks whether “gambling yards” still exist, ones which love to land a touch with a well-backed favourite. When I first became interested in horse racing some stables were…
