1.07 Limerick – EAGLES REIGN (1pt win, 6/1 William Hill)
I wrote the following about EAGLES REIGN after his comeback win in a Listed handicap hurdle at Listowel on September 26th…
“EAGLES REIGN kept on strongly to land the Liam Healy Memorial Lartigue Hurdle to take his record in handicap hurdle company to 1201 (2-4). Runner-up at 80-1 in last season’s Boodles at the Cheltenham festival, he’d had a prep on the Flat at Navan in late August to blow away the cobwebs and clearly gets on well with conditional jockey Tom Harney. The rain came in time, and he looks set for a good season on soft or heavy going.”
Ross O’Sullivan’s four-year-old only finished sixth of seven at Fairyhouse on his latest outing but was 33-1 for a Grade 3 contest and will appreciate the return to Listed handicap hurdle company today. The ground – officially yielding to soft – might be a shade quicker than preferred but Limerick can usually be relied upon to ride testing and he’s worth a bet.

3.22 Doncaster – WILLIE SHAKE HANDS (2pt win – 11/4 generally)
WILLIE SHAKE HANDS ran an eyecatcher in a maiden hurdle at Carlisle three runs back, doing well to finish sixth after racing in the ‘swamp’ on the inside rail. Sam England’s five-year-old built on that with a tenderly-handled 25-1 fourth of nine in Class 2 maiden hurdle company at Newcastle, after which I was surprised to see him given a handicap mark rather than be asked to run again. We bet him on his handicap debut at Doncaster earlier this month where the 18-1 shot finished just under three lengths back in third after not quite seeing out the 2m3.5f trip. He’s back to 2m today and looks set to run a big race in this 0-110 contest.

Andrew Mount’s Myth Busters – Does Cheltenham Form Translate from the Old Course to the New Course?
We have a two-day Cheltenham meeting to get stuck into at the end of the week (Friday/Saturday) where the action switches from the Old Course – used during October/November – to the New Course. Last month, the Racing Post published a ‘Walking The Course With Aidan Coleman’ article in which the jockey highlighted the differences…
