2.30 Doncaster – MODERN UTOPIA (1pt win, 5/2 William Hill, Unibet) & MANY MEN (1pt win – 9/2 bet365, William Hill, BetVictor)
There should be a decent gallop in this 1m2f despite the small field and PANTILE WARRIOR, CHARTWELL JOCK and MERSEA ISLAND could all put pace to the race. The two hold-up horses to concentrate on are MODERN UTOPIA and MANY MEN. The former is on a hat-trick after signing off last term with wide-margin wins at Nottingham (1m, heavy) and Newmarket (1m1f, soft) and, while the drying ground might not look ideal for George Scott’s three-year-old, she showed promise on good ground on her juvenile debut, keeping on well into fourth in a 7f novice contest, and should have plenty more to offer this term. MANY MEN appreciated the step up to this 1m2f trip when coming late to cause a 14-1 upset at Newmarket last October and that performance was worthy of an upgrade as the track was favouring early pace. Jim Boyle’s break returners often need the run at this time of year but if that were the case they wouldn’t be sending him all the way from Epsom to Doncaster for his reappearance where his trainer has scored with three of his last four runners (13-2, 7-2, and 13-8). I’ll also be playing the pair in a reversed forecast.

4.05 Downpatrick – JUMPING JET (0.5pt e/w, currently best at 11/11 William Hill, four places, but she’s 16-1 on Betfair and it might be worth holding fire for an hour or so as I’m expecting her to drift)
Mares have more than held their own in the recent renewals of the Ulster National, winning three times from nine runners in the past four seasons (+£14.00 to a £1 level stake at SP), with three of the beaten horses hitting the frame (5-1 second, 16-1 third and 12-1 fourth). JUMPING JET, last year’s winner, is the pick of today’s two qualifiers (the other is Iris Emery). Gordon Elliott’s nine-year-old had a prep run at Down Royal earlier this month, finishing second of three on her return from 120 days off the track, and can usually be relied upon to give her running in the spring. Her full record in the March to May period reads 112125162 (4-9) for a profit of £18.75 and she’s an each-way price.
