6.30 Southwell – ROYAL VELVET (1pt win – 10/1 generally)
ROYAL VELVET is capable of running well when fresh, finishing a 150-1 sixth at Kempton on her racecourse debut despite running very green (she reappeared just 12 days later to record a 12-1 win at Wolverhampton) and scoring at Newcastle last April after a 130-day break, suggesting that the 200-day absence won’t be an issue when she lines up in this 1m handicap. William Knight’s filly lost her 100% record on Tapeta when a two-length fifth of 13 at Wolverhampton last August but stall 1 was no help and she raced prominently in a race set up for the closers. There’s a good chance that she could improve this year, as older (4yo+) progeny of her sire, Lightning Spear, have a cracking record in all-weather handicaps, landing 17 of their 97 starts for a profit of £25.95 to a £1 level stake at SP (expected winners = 11.78, A/E = 1.44).
