3.30 Carlisle – TYSON MAGOO (1pt win – 15/2 888sport, 7/1 William Hill, 13/2 generally)
I was going to side with course expert Hello Judge in the 4.00 at Carlisle but there’s not much leeway in the price (around 11-4) given that he’s up in trip to 3m for the first time. Instead, my bet on the card comes in the 2m3f handicap hurdle in the shape of TYSON MAGOO. The five-year-old caught the eye in novice hurdle company at Catterick last time, finishing fourth (punted from 20-1 into 7-1) to a Willie Mullins hotpot after racing on the inside rail – the slowest part of the track. The switch to handicap hurdle company can bring improvement and his yard is in fine form.

3.50 Warwick – MASKED DANCE (0.5pt e/w – 25/1 generally)
I was expecting to tip Almuhit the next time he ran, as he won despite racing in the ‘swamp’ on the inside rail at Southwell last time on his first run after wind surgery. However, the drying ground is against him, and I’ll be having no more than a stake saver. Of greater interest in this 2m5f Class 4 handicap hurdle is Mel Rowley’s MASKED DANCE. The seven-year-old finished a creditable 18-1 third of 14 in a similar race at Huntingdon last time on ground softer than ideal and was an easy winner of a 14-runner handicap hurdle on good ground at Aintree last May when freshened up by a 45-day break. She returns from an identical layoff today and it’s interesting to see Charlie Deutsch taking over from Tabita Worlsey. Deutsch has a 14 from 55 record for the yard in handicaps for a profit of £20.03 to a £1 level stake at SP (expected winners = 7.74, A/E = 1.81). Two of those had been ridden by Worlsey last time out and they both ran second (14-1 and 12-1).
