2.25 Warwick – MOON OVER MEXICO (1pt win – 100/30 bet365)
MOON OVER MEXICO was a point-to-point winner for Colin Bowe in November of last year after which he changed hands for £30,000. That looked a shrewd purchase judged on his debut for Charlie Longsdon at Newcastle in late January where he landed a 2m4f heavy-ground novices’ hurdles at odds of 9-4. The winning margin was only a neck but runner-up Hazy Glen won a handicap hurdle off 117 two runs later, third-placed Pinot Rouge landed a Listed mares’ contest at Doncaster at 20-1 next time (tipped in this column at bigger prices) and fourth home From The Clouds won his next two (13-2 and 2-1) before unseating in a handicap hurdle off 122 when looking set to finish a close second at worse). Even the sixth-placed finisher, Whosmydaddy, weighed in with two wins shortly afterwards (100-30 and 7-4) and Moon Over Mexico looks worth a small interest despite returning from a 317-day break on ground that might prove to be a shade faster than ideal.

3.50 Taunton – DESPEREAUX (2pt win – 9/2 bet365)
The Jane Williams-trained DESPEREAUX clocked a fast time when scoring at Ludlow on his latest start, displaying a good attitude to score by almost four lengths under Freddie Gingell on his first start over 3m and first in cheekpieces. Since 2018, his trainer has a solid record with her handicappers in December, scoring with 15 of the 92 runners for a profit of £18.26 to a £1 level stake at SP, with the last time out winners landing six of their 13 starts for a profit of £15.43. Four of the seven beaten horses finished second (the others were third, fourth and fell) and Despereaux can overcome a 5lb rise in the weights.
7.00 Chelmsford – CHRISTIAN DAVID (1pt win – 13/2 William Hill)
Last year’s winner Diderot tends to race keenly and in a smallish field with no out-and-out pacesetters the early favourite could prove vulnerable. Take him on with Richard Hannon’s CHRISTIAN DAVID, who is having his first start since a Goodwood win back in June. The three-year-old colt went into my tracker after a solid effort from a poor draw at Newmarket in early May and the son of Profitable won’t have a problem with the return to Polytrack. He showed promise over 7f at Kempton on his racecourse debut, finishing a 33-1 seventh of 13 when too green to do himself justice, and was an easy winner over the same trip at Lingfield on his only other all-weather outing.
