4.25 Newbury – LOCAL HERO (0.5pt e/w – 12/1 Bet365, Spreadex, both paying four places)
LOCAL HERO has yet to win on turf but has only had four goes and clocked a good speed figure when fifth to the progressive Great Chieftain at Haydock last time. He broke smartly from a wide draw that day and was taken across to the rail to make the running but did too much too soon and helped to set the race up for those ridden with more restraint. The progressive winner raced in fourth place in the early stages but the runner-up, third, fourth, sixth and seventh all came from off the pace and his five-length defeat was a worthy effort in the circumstances. Candonmore, the prominently ridden eighth, improved his RPR by 15lb when a close second at Wetherby next time and Storm Catcher, the horse who pressed him for the early lead, dropped away to finish last. Richard Hannon’s four-year-old drops in class today, has a useful middle draw and could be in receipt of a relatively easy lead on this pace-favouring track. Sean Levey, on board for Local Hero’s three Kempton wins, returns to the saddle for the first time since the colt’s head second off a 2lb higher mark at the Surrey venue back in March.
6.30 Chelmsford – TIMEFORSHOWCASING (1pt win – 11/2 bet365, 5/1 888sport, 9/2 generally)
SOMEBODY heads the market at around the even-money mark now that she drops from Class 2 to Class 5 level after her runner-up effort to Logi Bear at Newmarket but she’s had plenty of chances and the Richard Spencer yard is quiet (24 runners and 27 days since a winner). I’d rather take a chance on newcomer TIMEFORSHOWCASING, whose trainer – Charlie Johnston – does well with two-year-old debutantes on the all-weather. Since his was the sole name on the training licence, Johnston is nine from 27 with juvenile fillies who were debuting on the all-weather for a huge profit of £85.00 to a £1 level stake at SP. Her full sister Show Of Stars won on her first Polytrack outing (second career start) as did her half-brother Enochdhu (fourth start). Another half-brother – Eagle One – won here at Chelmsford and she looks worth chancing.
