2.35 Epsom – BEAU JARDINE (2pt win – 10/1 bet365)
With Doncaster packed full of two-year-old races, including three nurseries, I’m happy to leave the big meeting alone until Thursday and head to Epsom for two bets.
I wrote the following about BEAU JARDINE in Racing & Football Outlook after his defeat at Lingfield (turf) on June 1st…
“Short-priced favourite BEAU JARDINE (stall 4) ended up in No Man’s Land down the middle of the track and his close-up fourth was worthy of an upgrade.”
I followed up with these comments after his defeat at Salisbury on August 30th…
“Take a quick glance at the form of BEAU JARDINE and it’s immediately obvious that he prefers soft going yet he was asked to race on fast ground in the 1m New Hall Hospital Adrian Wadforth Amateur Jockeys’ Handicap at Salisbury last Friday, his sixth consecutive outing on good or faster turf. Surprisingly, the Rachel Cook and John Bridger-trained six-year-old was sent off as 100-30 joint-favourite but couldn’t live up to that billing, trailing home over six lengths behind the winner in third of the six runners. His record on officially good to soft or faster going now reads 489027496543 (0-12), as compared to form figures of 12131 (3-5) on anything slower for a profit of £8.10 to a £1 level stake at SP. He’s now 6lb lower than when catching the eye from a poor low draw at Lingfield on June 1 and will surely bounce back to winning ways when underfoot conditions are in his favour.”
He’s now back on soft going (albeit officially soft, good to soft in places) but has been dropped another 1lb, now outing him 7lb lower than for his eyecatcher at Lingfield and is worth a bet, even if we only see half the forecast 12-1.

3.10 Epsom – LAWN RANGER (1pt win – 25/1 bet365)
Habitual front-runner LAWN RANGER could face competition for the lead from Dotties Star, who made the running when second at Windsor last time, but I can’t resist a punt on Michael Attwater’s veteran, especially if anything like the forecast 20-1 is available. Those of you with long memories may recall that I made him a confident bet at Windsor about 13 months ago where he was backed from 5-1 (Rule4) into 10-11 favouritism before scoring by two lengths. His last three wins have come at Windsor on soft/heavy ground but he’s effective elsewhere and typically runs well at this time of year, recording form figures in August/September of 4305112139284313850 (4-19) for a profit of £15.90 to a £1 level stake at SP, improving to 11831385 (3-8) on officially good to soft or softer going. With the ground described as soft, good to soft in places, it could be a case of first to the near side rail wins and his stall 8 of 9 draw could help in that respect.

Andrew Mount’s Myth Busters – Can we trust the official going description or is it usually wrong?
Haydock stages the Group 1 Sprint Cup this Saturday (September 7th, 2024) where the official going at the time of writing is ‘good to soft, soft in places’ with a GoingStick reading of 6.00. Of the three weather forecasts I study, the one I trust the most has just 3.5mm of rain due to fall…
