4.12 Sandown – HEROS (1pt win – 9/2 bet365)
The Venetia Williams-trained HEROS doesn’t look like an obvious bet after his 35-length fifth of seven at Haydock last month but that run, his first for 304 days, was probably needed and he was ridden patiently on a track that was strongly favouring early pace (all bar one of the winners raced on the front end on that January 18th card). His best efforts have come on right-handed tracks and he’s worth chancing to small stakes in a race that should be run to suit if he’s given another patient ride.

5.30 Chelmsford – CINQUE VERDE (1pt win – 11/2 bet365)
CINQUE VERDE did this column a favour when defying a market drift to score at odds of 18-1 in a 5f Wolverhampton handicap on her penultimate start and her subsequent third over 6f at Kempton was a solid effort as she blew the start when it was hard to come from off the pace (the winner/runner-up raced one-two throughout). Tony Carroll’s five-year-old is drawn widest of all in stall 7 of 7 for this evening’s 5f contest but there looks likely to be a strong early pace – especially with blinkered first-time front-runner Twilight Fun in opposition – and she should have the race run to suit. Progeny of her sire, Sioux Nation, have a useful record in smallish fields (ten or fewer runners), landing 138 of their 710 such starts (19.4% strike-rate) for a profit of £104.54 to a £1 level stake at SP (+£235.18 at Betfair SP after 2% commission). If we only consider races over 7f or shorter the score is 102 from 480 (21.3%) for a profit of £161.04 (+£265.81 at BSP).
